I was thinking of a new sound card i have audigy 2 with a sub and 4 speakers should i stay with what i have.

I do have a new mother board Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L with AC 97 it does not sound good at all and the rear speakers don't seem to do much, is this common.

I like to play games and watch movies.

Creative Labs XFI Xtreme Gamer will give you the performance you want.

Also 'speakers and sub' is a little loose.

I can go out and spend about $190 000 on 4 speakers and a sub, or I can spend $49.99...

The low rear speaker detail/volume is usually due to low quality OPAMPS (analog) or poor circuitry and crappy parts (digital). No Onboard sound is good quality- and surely even your Audigy 2 is much much better.
