Hey'lo everybody.
I was currious on how you can make SETI run faster on your systems, I've been runnign it for a while and ahve finished like 15 packets in about 400hrs, is this good or can i do better? so what is the deal?

Hello.

The number of WU's you can complete in any given amount of time is dependant mostly on your processor speed, but here's something to try if you already haven't....

Are you running the CLC (command line client) version? That seems to be a little quicker than the screen saver version. Use the CLC along with the SETI driver to cache your WU's and you should be crunching away. All the files and instructions you need are available on the team website.

Sounds like you are running about 26hrs per W/U. Whether this is good or not depends on your system setup. What cpu/memory/bus speed are you using?

SETI benefits most from higher memory bus speeds than raw cpu mhz. Also, larger cache cpus do really well. As to the program the CLC - command line client runs much faster than the screen saver version so consider trying it to cut your times down. It is also nice to use a cache program such as SETIQueue or SETIDriver to help you keep going during times when the main SETI site is offline etc. Running 24/7 without any screen savers or power management stuff turned on really helps as well. Remember that the fewer apps you have running the better so watch how many icons you have in the system tray as each one will be eating up resources and cpu time.

Good luck! :)

Looking at what you have (Celeron @700 Mhz and PC133 memory) seems that you need to do some tweaking. When ran my PIII 550E@732 Mhz, I used to crunch a WU in 7 hours. COnsidering you are using a Celeron you could be near the 8.5 h per WU.

First you could try to change to the command line client. It's easier to tweak than the screensaver. If you really love to see the graphs, then send a Personal Message to Jigpu, he seems to have some good experience in tweaking the screensaver.

Next change the settings of your PC so it behaves like a server, not like a PC. This can be done in the Control Panel/System/Hard Drive (well, it use to be there.....I really don't know in XP).

Fix the size of your virtual memory. And defrag your HD.

With all this you can shave some hours from your average.
