View Full Version : rheostat for hs fan
i tired to wire a radio shack 25 ohm rheostat to my dragon orb's 7K fan. i made sure that the rheostat was turned so the fan was at full speed when i powered the system on. that was fine. but, when i turned the knob to slow the fan down, the system crashed and the rheostat was smoking and smelled awful. i took the rheostat apart and sure enough it was burned. so, i am wondering what rheostat has worked successfully for ppl on delta fans or similar. i know i could do the 7volt trick but i like being able to control the speed. thanks for the help.:)
Did you use a Rheostat or a Potentiometer?

i think it was a pot based on the pic. [but i thot i bot a rheostat]
can you tell me specs on the rheostat i should use? thanks hoot.
The Rheostat in the picture is a 25W unit. That will serve you well, even for several fans on the same circuit. Ideally, 25 ohm is a good choice for resistance. If you try to buy one of these new, from a parts house like Allied, Newark, etc, "Sticker Shock" will take its toll. If you have an Electronics Surplus store in town, you can get one for 1/10th the price. If you don't, then just order a RH070 from Swiftech for $8.90

73, Hoot The RH070 is also available from www.inflowdirect.com for $11.95. I know the cost is slightly higher but Swiftech is not the fastest at shipping parts. The website says 2weeks. My experience is about 10days (and that was after paying 2 day air). Bought a HSF cost, 49.95 + 2day shipping = $74.00 total. Took 10 days to get the part!! Just my two cents.
Kentucky Fried Bird if your interested I think there was an article on modding a Digital Doc5 to control your fan speeds. Once the mod is done you can hit the up and down arrows and watch your fan speed change on the LCD display. To bad I just got rid of my digital doc.

Joe wrote this 11/16/00 down at the bottom he details rheostat you need its 25ohm 3w from Radio shack part number#271-265B.
I am running my delta black lable right now using one of these rheostats its been working fine.
I would not of bought this on my own cause I thought the rheostat would need to atleast match the fans in Wattage but apparently this rheostat can handle 5-6w fans. After buying the radio shack rheo I did go a to another place or to looking for a higher rated rheo but to no avail all I was able to find was a rheo rated the same for twice the money or more.
Good luck

I'd like to see that DigiDoc5 mod, I have one on the way and would be curious to try it.

thanks for the responses. i am now certain that the item i managed to burn up was a 25 ohm rheostat from the shack. either i got a bad rheo OR (much more likely) i wired something wrong. i will ponder my options and decide after i finish my 8kha voltmod - part II.
