View Full Version : Win 2K PRO
how do I enable DMA on my Hd's and CD-ROMs???
I can not find this feature and my drive performance has decreased greatly since going from WinME to Win2K PRO
what is your chipset?
the chipset drivers should enable it for you. i beleive that w2k pro has only the cache option available for the hard drive, am not sure.
chipset drivers use to have an IDE controller that will enable the dma option if your hardware support it.

I run the EPOX KTA3+ mobbo with the VIA chipset....
so I need to config in my BIOS?
If it's set to auto in the BIOS then you're good there. As far as Win2K goes, make sure you have SP2 installed, it has the driver (VIA Busmaster) capable of the ATA100 standard built in and you shouldn't have to enable it.
If you're using an ATA adapter (or RAID adapter) the driver for it should also have it enabled as long as SP2 is installed.

ok check my settings - i have that all installed, Is there a way to change computer roles? like in WinME where you go from desktop computer to network server?

enable in bios, for sure. but you also have to make sure it is enabled in device manager.
in device manager, go to ide ata/atapi controllers, then double click each controller and go to advanced settngs. there is where you can switch between dma and pio.
hope it helps!
Wink Advanced Server has the configuration you're looking for but Win2K does not. Fortunately, it is already set at it's optimal configuration which is similar to the Network Server role in 98/ME.
If you go to My Computer Properties, Advanced tab, Performance Options button, it should be set to Applications. This is the same as the #3 option when configuring Advanced Server and is what you want.
A far as configuring TCP/IP optimally, I would suggest going to Speedguide.net (http://www.speedguide.net) and downloading one of their pre-made patches for Win2K and your connection type. If on dial-up, it probably will make your connection worse. In this case, visit Tweak3D.net (http://www.tweak3D.net) and follow one of their dial-up tweak guides for maximum connection speeds listed on the left/bottom of the page.

I am on satellite broadband
no dial up for me - EVER AGAIN!

If you have two VIA Busmaster controllers listed then you won't have that option. Don't worry though as they're automatically set by the driver.
As far as having satellite...I'm not sure what to use. I'd still assume the patches would do better than default Win2K settings though, they're not very good for any broadband other than a LAN.

i'm at work right now on a p3, w/ win2k, that's what it has. when i go work on one of the other amd computers, or go home i'll see if maybe different mb have different settings.
sorry for confusion, i just recalled doing that several times before and then did the step by step from the computer i was using at the time.

i just put win2k SP2 and it has the option for DMA mode, for VIA Chipsets you should be able to get bus master drivers for other chipsets!
The newest VIA busmaster drivers no longer have the option of enabling/disabling DMA since it is done automatically. The older busmaster drivers, VIA pack 4.35 and before I believe, did allow this (along with the default drivers Win2K installs when not using the VIA service pack drivers).
Don't worry though, you are correct and there really is no need in upgrading to the newer set. They do solve some issues and increase performance in XP but in my experience have not done anything in Win2K. I've actually not noticed any IDE performance since the 4.34 service pack from VIA.

with WinME I was scoring 5.2Meg download speeds!
Hmm...what are you getting with Win2K?

how do i kno if my HD can use DMA ?
i have a 60gig Maxtor 7200 Fireball and a 80gig WD 7200
also it say in the Device Manager PIO only but also DMS (if posible) so if i enable it and i cant use it will it just reset to PIO ? also will it ask me to format ? ween i change the mode ? or anything that would force me to back up? before i set it?
thx allot

Also just to add i just noticed that i have a "?" in my Device Manager its a PCI devise ? i just cant seem to figure out what it is ? LOL i just saw it ween i reistalled Win2k Pro....but my system works fine just wanted to kno if u hade a idea what it could be ?
thx again =)
oooh ok just wanted to add my 80gig WD is set to DMA one so its just the info i should need for the 60gig Maxtor =)

I updated my VIA drivers and the advanced tab for DMA became available - WIERD!!!! my still drive scores in sandra are on the low side.... and I don't understand how to rank ATTO scores.

If you set it to enable DMA - it will NOT require a format or anything like that, it will give your system the power to detect if it can indeed run DMA..... if so then you will automatically be put into DMA.

All modern hard drives will be able to use DMA
ah ic and whats the diference in PIO and DMA ?

PIO is an old ATAPI accronym (can't even remeber what it stands for) DMA (Direct Memory Access) bypasses certain things and give more direct thus faster access, i can't remember the specifics and in depth reasons all i know is its faster and better!!!
All you should really know is PIO is just older technology and DMA is now the modern and is way faster.
Ahh ic well thats good 2 kno i hade my 60gig Maxtor on PIO and now its on DMA not sure if i see a diference but hey im not gona complain =p
You'll notice differences when something is like intense as for gaming maps and benchmarking drives.

the drive will be faster in intense operations like gaming etc, defrag etc etc!!
Oooooo ok ic =) well i best be on my way to game :burn:
