The only time I cried during a game is when I was trying to get Tidus's legendary weapon in Final Fantasy X. You had to beat this Chocobo race and I couldnt do it, took me hours. Threw my controller up and down the room multiple times lol.

Only if I worked really hard at something and then I get owned or some kind of technical failure happens and my work is all gone.
Fire Emblem games on the GBA had your characters die permanently and if you tried resetting the game, it would pick up at the very last thing that happened...forcing you to watch yourself lose/have someone die over and over until you restarted the map.

I fess up, Portal made me cry with a large dose of bacardi. I never thought a puzzle game could end so beautifully (brilliance). I still get teary eyed hearing the still alive song...only thing that has ever made me cry besides band of brothers...now just thinking about these two

well call me emotional... but heck yea. I love getting wrapped up in a good storyline.
Noteable tear jerkers:
Phantasy Star IV - many moments
Lunar 2 - when the girl has to pass on and leave the group to ascend and do a greater good
Final Fantasy Tactics (the first, and imho ONLY real one) - Ramza having to kill his brother
Sonic and Knuckles (think of Knuckle's revelation/defeat)
I cried happy tears after finishing Ocarina of time
...also during the multiple endings for NiGHTS into dreams

It seems to me like there was one that kind of got me (Story wise, not frustration wise) but I'll be damned if I can remember which one it was. To those unfamiliar, the ending to Mass Effect is as good or better than Portal, especially the song "M4 part II" by Faunts.

i, too, got very emotionally involved with the original FFTactics.
imo best storyline in ANY game, period.
all the twists made you question who was really on your side and who was a traitor.
dunno why every FF junkie claims FF7 had the best storyline, tbh. i know people irl who were absolutely devastated when Aerith died. i actually cheered... but that's just me. Ramza's brother and a handful of other characters on FFTactics, though... sadface.

The quest in WoW entitled "For Love Eternal" was quite touching. I didn't cry but that was a close second to the FFX storyline, that did bring a tear to my eye. Hey, I'm human. If that didn't get to you, not too much will.
Prey had a pretty sad ending to it. There have been a few games though that I have finished, and grin like a fool, because it made me feel good. I like games like that.
And you reminded me OldSkool, there is a quest chain in wow, The Fallen Hero quest chain that I really enjoyed. Had a nice feel to it, and even though its OLD, you feel accomplished when you finish.

I think I cried one time in a videogame but I can't remember what it was. I just know it was an incredibly emotional moment due to the way the I grew attatched to the characters.
Plenty of heavy moments in games though. I thought the end of GRAW 2 was pretty powerful. So was the middle of CoD4.

star fox 64. at the very end "never give up fox, trust your instincts" and then his father appears to guide you out of the flaming tunnel and disappears. i was boohooing quite a bit by the end where you are walking down the red carpet and then the credits with the sunset. pretty profound stuff! I think thats a bit harsh. Any moving story can amke someone cry. It reminds us that we're human, and if a game is that good it's probably very entertaining.

No, but I must confess, I nearly shed a tear the other night while watching Iron Man when Stark is on the ground and the robotic arm hands him what he was reaching for. My eyes felt watery and I was thinking, "WTF?! Am I turning into a woman?! I need to go yell at an old lady after this movie to make myself feel like a big man!" Great movie btw!

I can't recall crying over a video game... but when I was small, I remember getting emotional after beating Zelda OOT, and Mario 64.
The only times I've felt emotional lately is when some unlucky, nice side character dies in a pitiful way, something in the lines of Resident Evil or Silent Hill.

I got sad after helping some poor underworld tribe of people in Knights of the Old Republic. I had already beaten the game, so I knew their world was going to be destroyed. After helping them, they all sounded so happy to get their lives back, and finally be able to live like people. But I knew in 10 minutes, they'd be toast. :(

I can't recall crying over a video game... but when I was small, I remember getting emotional after beating Zelda OOT, and Mario 64.
I remember playing Zelda for days at a time, and yes that is still a classic.
I haven't cried over a game but I know someone who has. It was Super Bowl night and my Daughter and her family were over to watch the game in HD. My 5 yr old Grandson was playing Lego Starwars on my 360. He was at a spot where he knew what he needed to do but just couldn't pull it off. Normally, in that situation, either his Dad or myself would go in and help him. But it was the last 4 minutes or so to go in the game so we weren't of much use to him. So after quite some time of trying to make the combo of jumps he needed to do, I heard the controller hit my desk, followed by his forehead, and then the sobs. Of course, it being an hour past his bedtime didn't help either. My Daughter went in and told him maybe he had just played too long for the day.
I damn near shed a tear when my mom threw out my nes, 3 guns, half a dozen controllers, and ~3k worth in games.

Grim Fandango is the closest I've come.
And now I cry thinking LucasArts will never make a good adventure game again. What happened to adventure gaming? :( Dreamfall is this tiny oasis in a massive desert.

Chances are that they survived since they were underground. The Sith didn't have any death star type weapons and could only bombard the surface.

I haven't shed a tear, not even when I deleted my 2x lvl purpled out 70's on WoW + my 67, I'd think if I was going to come close it would be then. My wife watched me play FFX, and she cried at the end. That was my favorite FF story line, actually of any storyline in any game I've played.
Edit: Maybe when I play Star Wars Force Unleashed, if it's as good as they say it will be, but it never is =(

No game has made me cry...cuss and get mad many, many, many times. For example BF1942 after about a year and a half the game started to crash to my desktop. The more I tried to play the more frequently it would crash. By the time I was done with the game it would crash every5-10 minutes. so Iwalked the disc's outside gently sat them on the ground and beat the **** out of them with a hammer.

definitely can relate to that! lol.. now games have angered me, enough to break my xbox headset and many more, but never emotionally dragged me in.
well i guess except for Mass Effect when iwas trying to hook up with this alien chick but she wouldnt give me the time of day.. made me cry for weeks. i refused to leave my room! i threw my best game at her but nope, i ended up settling on the stupid human girl:(
hahaha, atleast i amuse myself. by and large though, Mass Effect is an amazing game with a great story line.
and as some others have said, everytime i beat a video game, i want to cry because i know i will never get those hours of my life back. kind of the same way when i spend a whole day hung over from the night before. man, the amount of saturdays and sundays i have lost due to hangovers :(:(

oh and i also got pretty angry when i had two xbox 360s go on me. one RROD and one constant freezing. both times i just ended up returning my xbox for a replacement because repair was going to take like 6 to 10 weeks. each time i lost a couple of games that iw was like 75% done with and was now going to have to start off. no tears, but i think they may have been in order.
Half-Life 2: Episode Two's ending was very emotional, and the music that follows the final scene is equally poignant. It didn't actually made me cry, but I got wet eyes and then I thought "wow, ok that was great for a game".
There are a few moments in some games that have made me a bit emotional because of the story.. but I haven't cried.
In my books if a game can pull off either giving you that emotional high/low when something happens then they're doing their job....

+1 The ending was unbelievable. No tears but I got a little misty. Half Life 2 sucks me in like no other game, though. There hasn't been any other game with any other story line that has sucked me in like HL2 and the episodes. There hasn't been a game yet that's matched it in that arena either. HL2 owns every game ever made when it comes to storyline and making you actually care about the characters.

Came close to it only once. Red Faction, the original. At the end the computer hacker dies who was helping you throughout the whole game. He was the guy always on the radio, always ready to help, who finally came to join you. I was so excited to see him out. And suddenly, BAM, rocket, and a bad girl comes on intercom.

Pokemon gold edition when I was seriously young, I think about 8. I played it for god knows how long, I don't remember how far exactly I think I was about 90% the way through. Anyway long story short, I deleted my saved game somehow and had to go all the way back to the beginning. I don't remember a game that actually made me cry... But generally if a game's story and atmosphere is good, I get as immersed as I would when watching a good movie.
I have felt sad a few times when a character dies (for example in the first Deus Ex I remember feeling kinda sad for the helicopter pilot friend of the protagonist who died because of an in-game decision)

oh man i forgot to mention when i put down FFXI...
let me just start by saying that game was TOO involving for me... like a great book with no end in sight, I was just sucked in and couldn't pull myself out without my friends' help...
my mithra character was almost a real part of me, and letting her go was like a family member had died. I didnt' actually cry over it, but I did feel empty and sad for a few weeks. I'm glad I put that game down now - I'm kind of susceptible to a good-to-great game, but FFXI taught me that a game can be TOO addictive.
EDIT: oh yeah... adding Starfox 64 to my list... =D
I think I can claim the biggest videogame crybaby award so far! Here's my up-to-date list:
Phantasy Star IV - many moments
Lunar 2 - when the girl has to pass on and leave the group to ascend and do a greater good
Final Fantasy Tactics (the first, and imho ONLY real one) - Ramza having to kill his brother
Sonic and Knuckles (think of Knuckle's revelation/defeat)
Starfox 64 - ending
NiGHTS into dreams - most of the endings, plus that themesong at the credits
Ocarina of time - definitely at the end, sniffled a bit when leaving Saria and Ruto
