Besides the name, how are the two different? Are there any architecture differences? If you run 1 MP vs. 1 XP would the performance be the same?

Exact same chips except the mp is goes through one more test at AMD that verfies them to run them in dual mode. Some MP's come unlocked as well... besides that THERE IS NO OTHER DIFFERENCES.

Yep..remember that these mp's are meant for aimed towards the dual market which is business's with money who are willing to spend not the average consumer. AMD figures they can take advantage of it and make a few extra bucks.

How does AMD prevent XPs from running in dual mode? The bios detects it and forces it to shut down one of the cpu, right?

there was an article on the front page of overclockers.com a while back that stated the possibility that soon the amd xp's may not run in dual mode (not the xp's fault, something to do with the bios or whatnot that amd wants to implement to force you to buy the mp's)

but yes, they are basically the same thing. i heard all mp's are unlocked, but that was a while back, maybe they're being locked now.

does this depend on the motherboard?
