can i 486 motherboard handle a "newer" 10 gig hardrive?

Depends on the BIOS. On some setups you can put on a "dumb" jumper on the hard drive. Instead of 1 10GB you would get 5 2GB virtual hard drives.

A while back I set up an old 486 with Linux as a web server. Since it had PCI slots I just added a new Promise controller and it worked like a champ with a 10gig maxtor. The software disk that comes with most HD's today should also work if you are just going to use it for windows.

why would you want to use a 486,

you could probably get a p1 or p2 for like $30
