View Full Version : Ok this has been brewing for a bit, but what about a OC Massive Lan Party?

In the game discussion fourm theres a thread "Lan party Q"

http://forums.overclockers.ws/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=55485

Basically a couple of us want to organize a massive Lan party for everybody in the fourms, I know this is not possible for the Overseas people but the US I think it could be cool. Many ideas are it to be held in the middle states so as to be fare for the people on the Coast. Plus we want to know how many people will show. Read the above thread to get what we are talking about. Post ideas here.

with today's high speed access, you almost don't need to be in the same room. The other mods and I play UT often w/o a glitch.

Why not just set up a massive on line lan, and invite everyone who plays anything at OC.com. We could set up a chat room and frag to our hearts content.

Oh and Seniors....better start brushing up on UT...we're about ready to start laying the smack down. =)

Can you imagine the sound of all those OC'd computers in one place?

I can dig it, I like the internet and chat room party idea.

Or how about we set up city lans on the same day and get together on a central server/ servers? At least we'd be able to meet some of the people that live relatively close to us.

LAN part Q is my post. YAY!!!! I think the whole big OC chat room UT thing is a good idea. Also, we should pic a time/date and have skip post it on the main page for all to see. We should also consider other games for those who don't have UT (shame on them) or for people who just want other games.

So far the other mods and I are just learning the game, or brushing up on skills. We'll definitely have a frag fest if you like. Usually 8 or 9ish pm Central is when we play a few.

Yes, yes... Shame on me... Guess you guys will have to set up a Descent party. It's the only multiplayer game I have :( .

Could set up a hpb server and a lpb server, maybe a mixed one for people who promise not to whine about the ping difference.

I think that at the LAN party only half the time will be spent on fragging and the other half on drooling and on "How'd cha do that" questions :p. Imagine all the heat the OCed AMDs will put out:eek:, the party better somewhere cold like Canada and outside for that matter.

I think an OC.com lan party would be an awesome event. Online would be good but I believe there would be too many problems with connections and lags and such. I wouldn'nt mind driving several hours to attend such an event, I definately wouldn't be able to afford a flight there though.

It would be interesting to see everybody's rig. I definately would spend half the time scoping out people's rigs and asking them about it.

eh?
01-04-02, 03:01 PM
i agree.. i would drive for a couple of hors and pick people up on the way for a carpool and such...( I will get to use my moms Lexus:D) i could pick up like 5 people with their computers. It would be intersting and everyone would have to chip in and help pay for the place that we rent....but it would have to be worth it we need like 100 or more people to go...
*edit*maybe one of the mods could make a poll......(hint hint)

one of the reasons of doing this is so we can meet everyone else....besides if a 100 people show up at all 3 places then the lag would huge besides what if we switched games.... i think we should meet at 1 big place that would be more fun

The reasoning behind my decision is as such: I'm not going to spend $300 on a plane ticket or $100 on gas to drive to Nowheresville Kansas. However, I have no problem driving up to San Fransisco, or even 30 minutes West, to Los Angeles.

I think alot of people agree with me too. It just doesn't make sens to spend so much money to meet others from OC.com.

How about one in California, one in Minnesota or Wisconsin (because I don't want to drive very far), and one somewhere near the east coast. At least one of these should have a decent connection to the internet, so those who can't attend physically can connect over the internet.

If you need more hub/switches for this event, I may be able to procure some at an extremely low cost. My dad's fiance is a part owner and sales rep. for a sales company that represents a wide variety of manufacturers, including one that makes networking equipment. although I'm not sure how high quality this equipment might be, I can get anything they sell either free or at cost (NO, I WILL NOT SELL YOU ANYTHING I GET FROM HER).

Here's my thoughts on this, Chicago sounds like a good compromise for a location for the midwest. Although skip if hundreds of people show up at your house are you really going to have the room? It would be nice to do a cooperative massive online fragfest but in reality I think LAN would be fine, just do a pc that is connected to get live webcam updates from the other parties, maybe a matrox dual head config with two nice size monitors? Then we can still say hi to everyone else, I think the purpose is more meeting everyone and getting to know them all. I say we plan it for a few months in advance as someone said perhaps get a conference room somewhere. Three locations sounds like a good deal, Perhaps somewhere around FL, IL, and maybe CA or some such place that way good attendance would be in effect. Now games would need to be discussed and decided on beforehand so those who do not posess the required games could purchase them prior to the LAN. One more thing to figure out is where and how we are going to come up with the networking equipment, do we do an RSVP prior so we can estimate how many ports we will need? Someone should look into cost of renting a Conference room, Networking equipment IE Switches perhaps skip has some contacts that would be willing to loan that equipment perhaps for sponsor rights on the frontpage of the Site? Just some thoughts here, also what about game servers. More than likely for most games you will need some dedicated servers so what about that? I can chip in a Dual Celly Server for it. Anyone else have some ideas on this ? These are my thoughts thus far and some of the problems I see with some of this. Anyone want to volunteer to do a little legwork, IE calling around and finding out some info and coming up with some prices perhaps we could do it for like 10$ or so per person to pay for the Conference room and maybe refreshments and such.

Just my thoughts I like the idea, just need's some ironing out as far as I can see.

it depends how many people show up, if 150 people show up then im sure 1500 is enough to rent a conference room and then some... also Chicago is a good comprise its in the middle but it is a little high up...

Maybe more suburb of chicago then, not many people are going to want to deal with the hustle and bustle of downtown. Just my thoughts on this, again always open to suggestion, just think chicago or around those parts is not a bad compromise for most of the midwest guys.

My $.02:

Chicago wouldn't be too bad, though I would personally prefer Minneapolis (closer to Grand Forks, ND).

For so many people, we would need multiple servers (i've yet to see a game that can handle 100+ in one game. Wouldnt' that be something else?!?). Many people in one game really rules out any HL mod, more likely Tribes2 or another game (they're easier on the server's for large games, as well). Perhaps two Tribes2 servers? That's over 120 people right there.

I love the idea, though.

Sure it would!! If you wanted to play against some aliens that us SETI obsessors are hunting for though, we'd have to set up some kind of WAN game... :D

Well, let me offer up another idea. How about having a LAN party in every state in some major city or something, and then people close to the 50 special cities could go there. We wouldn't get to see as many people's computers and such, but I could never convince my parents to drive to california just for an Overclockers LAN party! (mabey if we had to visit a relitive down in southern Oregon perhaps... :D). I'm sure that some people are limited like this too, and so this is probably the best solution I can think of for having LAN parties witout too big a driving problem.

BTW: The reason I don't have UT isn't a money thing... I could probably get it if I wanted with my christmas money. The problem is the evil 'M' (for mature...) stamped on front. If it has that special letter, I'm not allowed to install it... :(

Well i know of an established lan in MOdesto Cali
about and hour from the bay and 6 from LA.
And we will take as many as we can.
the next lan will be mid Feb.

Goto: Modesto Lan (http://www.modestolan.com)
And drop by in the forums and sign up if you'd like.

and if that isnt good enough we could get TT120 to bug the guys from Lantrocity to make a special Ocz Lan...
just a thought.

When you make a decision, post a new topic so we can all see what it is.

I think Chicago would be good...I know another overclocker up there who I would go and stay with...don't know about bringing a monitor, though, since I would fly :/

So are we getting anywhere on this.
I really would like to know how to make more formal planning of such an event.

For those who can't drive, or don't have alot of time, this is the best option:

Let's host it in several major cities, with 5-10+ computers hooked up with webcams to the other cities. It will cut down on cost and time.

My suggestions for cities are:
New York
Chicago
Seattle
Texas

anybody like this idea? I'd only attend the NYC one......
