What are the fastest hard drives? I'm pretty sure it's SCSI, but what's the fastest, and what is the most economical?

Should I buy a SCSI drive, or just stick with my 60gb IBM deskstar 7200rpm?

How much more performance would see with a SCSI drive?

If you think I shouldn't get a SCSI drive, then what upgrade would you get for about $300. (I got this as an x-mas gift)

I would love it if i could get answers from the experts

dual T-birds @ 1400mhz each
Tyan S2460 mobo
256mg of pc2100 (soon to be 512)
60gb IBM deskstar 7200rpm
Radeon 8500
Sound Blaster live! 5.1 w/ creative 5300 5.1 surround sound
19" monitor
16x DVD (didn't buy a decoder card or software...can't i use the Radeon?)
10x4x40 burner

If your system isn't being accessed by several other work stations, you probably won't notice the difference. And if all you have is $300, you'll probably not get a good system unless you're not planning on using RAID.

However if you would like to see a nice improvement, try IDE RAID or even 10,000 rpm IDE drives.

I'm in agreement with Shadow.

SCSI won't give you much of a performance gain (I've seen several remark they felt SCSI lagged for them) and you'd still need to buy a SCSI adapter...hence, $300 won't really cut it.

IDE RAID does outperform single SCSI in linear use (which is what you will be doing) and is a good cost-effective solution, I swear by it and use it on nearly all my systems (link in sig). Couple of 20GB IBM 60GXP Deskstars and a Promise FastTrak sure does some smokin' (Also goes for only about $250 max after shipping).

Yes IDE RAID does kick! I am a big fan of it to and use it in my systems. For the price you can't beat the speed and storage capacity as compared to SCSI.

what kind of seek times would i get w/ two 60gb deskstars set on RAID compared to just one w/o raid

i already have one 60 gig deskstar........what if i got a 20 gig..........partitioned 40 off the main.......and did raid with the two 20's.

I'm not interested in having a backup hard drive....so what RAID would I do....0?
