View Full Version : Can't get SMP to send points to me and team 32?

For some reason, I can't change the SMP folding program off the default to "Anonomous" and "Team 0"?? I've been checking with FahMon every time.
I tried many different ways to get my name and team corrected with no luck. Here is what I tried:
1. First I simply deleted and then erased the client.cfg file then tried restarting the fah.bat file but it told me I needed to stop the program first.
2. I restarted and then clicked on the fah.bat file and correctly inputed my name and team and settings...but FahMon said it still did not update?
3. I deleted the client.cfg file, opened up the task manager and ended the fah tree and all 4 cores, then waited a few minutes, erased the client.cfg file from the recycle bin, then started the fah.bat and reentered my information...but fahmon still says I did not change anything?
4. I tried various versions of this sometimes restarting and other times just waiting and restarting just the program instead of the PC.
Can anyone help? It still says anaonomous and team 0 and now I lost all my progress for the current WU. :( Please write down somewhat easy to understand step-by-step instructions, thanks.

Have you tried just changing the .cfg file instead of deleting it? Just make sure you don't delete any of those block characters.

Tommy, what is this fah.bat file you keep mentioning?
Do this:
1) Stop the fah program with (Ctrl+c) if it's a console program with a window.
If it's a service install, use Start>>Control Panel>>Administrative Tools>>Services, scroll down to the FAH service and right click on it. Choose "Stop" from the pop up window that appears.
2) Wait 30 seconds for FAH to end it's threaded cores.
3) Delete the client.cfg file (you don't have to erase it, but can if you like).
Be sure your answers are Y or y, or yes; or N or n, or no. Many times the default, where you just need to hit the Enter key to put in a value, is fine as well. Wrong key presses on input, will goof up FAH, so be careful.
4) Now restart the FAH.exe program (not a bat file), and you'll make the FAH program go into it's setup function.
Remember:
Use IE settings: No
Allow large WU's or Big Packets: Yes
And when you're done answering the questions, you should be good to go. Fahmon will be wrong until you re-start it or wait until it re-reads the client.cfg file you just made with FAH.
Do not rely on what FAHmon reports in the upper right window. Read the log. FAHmon has trouble with the username when different names appear in close proximity in the log.

Yeah I have tried just changing the client.cfg file only using notepad. The funny thing is, when I look at notepad it has the correct information? I am surprised it is not reporting correctly?
Tommy, what is this fah.bat file you keep mentioning?
There are 2 fah files... one is fah.bat and the other is the fah application. The batch file is the one I created when using the cmdow.exe program to hide F@H SMP in my task bar. I have tried both ways of restarting the program, using the normal fah application as well as fah.bat to see if one or the other worked.
Do this:

Because cmdow.exe is running, the window is not popping up and for some reason I can't get the hide or unhide batch files to work? I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that I made my own file on the C drive called C:\FAH to install everything in? If so, how should I rename the file because I have tried that too...
Here is the code that Landshark used in his sticky to hide the SMP program: How should I modify it to work now that I have it running out of the C:\FAH folder if that is the problem?

I did do that, sometimes waiting a full minute and sometimes even restarting before each try to see if there was a difference?

I tried both erasing it and also just plain modifying it in the notepad.

For some reason I am not recieving any points now though so I think FahMon is correct. I have a few machines all running F@H SMP and I have not seen any of the large point SMPs post after a few days now... All the machines have turned in at least 3 each so I should have a ton of points. FahMon still reads Anonomous and Team 0.

fahspy is a alternate to fahmon btw...
Nevermind the bat file for now, and nevermind hiding the icon, for now. Just follow the directions and you'll be fine.
THEN you can run your bat file, and use your program to remove the icon, all you want. You don't need to change your bat file, for this.

I think the problem is that your username isn't set properly. It should be T32monkeys. :p

FahSpy says my user name and team correctly... TommyHolly, Team 32...
So it looks like FahMon was wrong and I did have everything installed correctly from the beginning...UGH (Too bad because I wiped a WU that was 75% finished)
OK well, I am currently 57% finished with my current WU and FahSpy says it will probably finish working on it at 3:47am. So hopefully I should see the points for this one when I wake up in the morning. I'm not sure why I have not seen any points from any of my other PCs because it looks like I had everything installed correctly from the beginning?
I'll repost with the results of what happened tomorrow.
If you had it installed right from the beginning, FAHmon would have reported it correctly. FAHmon is merely slow to note a change in the username.

2x 1275 pointers I turned in early this morning have not shown up in the stats yet. Sometimes there is a delay getting credited from the collection server to stanford's points page.

Hmmm I think it worked, although I can't tell. The EOC stat page had some kind of error yesterday and added 2 days worth of points together so I can't tell the points apart.
Here is a pic from FahSpy, as you can see, I think everything will work now. On a side note, why does it say a total of 7,040 points? Is it totalling up how many WUs I have done on this PC or is it totalling how many finished WUs I have YET to send in? The reason why I ask is because it says "ready to send"??

Tommy, it's showing 4 views of the very same WU, in the very same directory. Notice that the specifics of the WU (run#, clone#, generation#), are all the same, and they're all at the exact same 77%.
I'm not familiar with FahSpy, but that's what's going on with it.

Well this proves it... I am definately NOT getting the points for SMP!!? There are no updates for 1760 points anywhere?? Even if the EOC stats page is slow, you can add up the points on standford's page and only come to an 782 point increase.

As you can see, I was supposed to have an extra 1760 points from turning this WU in at around 1:36am As of 5:43 am the stanford page is reporting that I have 1,319,575 points which is only a difference of 782 points!!
Tommy, post a copy of each machine's client.cfg and log, wrapped in code tags.

Has it been doing this for 2 weeks? I've had 4 new machines running SMP and so far I have not seen any points turned in when other have. :( Does my client setup and fahlog look ok? It seems fine to me so far...
TH, please remove -advmethods, from your start up flags, and restart the FAH client.

I'm using the same SMP client you are, with the same flags, except for " -advmethods", and I have had very little trouble returning my WU's.

Try running qfix in the FAH directory. The fact that you can't hit the work server, .64 or the collection server, .76 while everybody else can tells me the problem is on your end rather than Stanford's. Run the connectivity test and see what happens:

171.64.122.76 is not set up to establish a connection on port "World Wide Web Service (HTTP)" with this computer

Actually the collection server is a backup to the work server. FAH tries to send the WU back to the work server first and in your log, it couldn't connect to it. Then it tried the collection server which isn't accepting WUs right now.
So we have to figure out why you can ping .64 and download from .64, but can't upload to it. It's not likely to be a timeout issue since it only takes 1 second to error on the upload attempt. Could it be an ISP issue, limiting your upload size?

Hmmm, this is strange? Since I am currently traveling right now and all the data I've been giving you is from my laptop located in my hotel room, I would have guessed that the Hotel's internet was the problem. (They are currently having problems with it's speed right now too!)
However, I have 3 other PCs back at my house that are on a high speed 13Mb/sec broadband system that should have no trouble connecting yet they too have not reported a thing?
The only thing I have yet to try is Adak's suggestion above about removing the -advmethods flag. (But because this is more likely and internet problem, I don't see why that would work?) Thanks for helping me everyone. As soon as this gets fixed, I should have about an extra 6,000-8,000ppd folding for our team!
It's not that removing the advmethods flag will fix the probem, Tommy. It's just what you do to troubleshoot something. Keep stripping it down to it's barest essentials, until you have eliminated enough variables to identify exactly what is the problem.
Chance of this being an ISP problem, when it's happening on two different ISP's, with three different rigs, many miles apart -- and not with any other folder -- zip.

We'll need to see the client.cfg and logs from the other rigs. It could well be an ISP issue on the laptop and username of the other three. Chances of it being related to -advmethods are also zip.
Looking in the Stanford Forum, I see several problems that have been solved by turning off advanced methods - either in client.cfg, or in the initialization string as a "flag". They are very different problems from the one that Tommy describes, but if we knew the answer to his problem, we wouldn't be having this thread at all.
Here's one from April 4th, by Uncle Fungus:
If you're running the client with "Advanced scientific methods" turned on, try turning it off in the configuration.
Uncle Fungus, for those that don't know, is the owner of Stanford's folding forum, and very knowledgeable about FAH.
I agree completely that Tommy's problem is not likely to be the advanced methods flag, but it is *a* variable, and trouble shooting SOP is to remove variables, whenever you can, from the list of "suspects".
I did not mean to imply that his home ISP couldn't be the problem with the rigs, at home. I meant that the chance that both ISP's (hotel and home), would have the same server blocked, was practically zero.

The laptop I am using is literally right out of teh box. I turned the PC on, connected to the wireless router, logged onto this website as the first website this laptop has ever seen, clicked on that link...and it didnt work.
When I tried clicking on that link last time, it was at a hotel on a different PC. This time I tried it at my house. No luck... Now I wonder why it wouldn't work on a brand new PC that isnt even running F@H?

I just went thought the connection test too Tommy... and I can't get a response from 171.64.122.76 either.
Although, I'm not having any problems sending or receiving work, and I'm all SMP here at home. :shrug: I don't really think that helps you, but I figured I'd lend a hand in testing.
I can say this though... most of the time my SMP clients don't get hooked up to the, I assume collection server, the first time around. It usually takes at least 2, if not 3, retries by the client before my SMP clients get hooked up and results turned in... could it be due to the, I assume, high work load on the SMP collection server?
Will continue watching this thread and try the SMP collection server again later to see if I can get a standard http response.
That server is currently listed as Reject(ing) connections:
"Reject" means that the server should be up and accepting connections, but isn't.
I can't connect with it, either.
You should be sent to another server, that you can connect with, and that isn't happening.
You server is chosen based partly, on your client.cfg file contents, and on certain flags that may be in your initialization start up string.
I hope that someday soon, you'll get around to changing your start up configuration, and removing -advmethods as a flag in your initialization start up string.

OK, there were a number of unrelated problems...
#1. The main problem was the one we already solved...for some reason the client.cfg file went back to saying "anonomous" and "team 0". All I had to do to fix that was edit teh client.cfg file in notepad.
#2. I fixed the problem in notepad but because I was on the road in a hotel that had problems with thier internet, nothing was able to get sent through. So even though we fixed the name, I didnt have a good enough connection.
#3. All the computers back in my house were defaulted with "anonomous" and "team 0" so I simply had to go through each one of them and change it. My guess is that the 3 other computers I installed SMP have the same name issue.
EVERYTHING IS FIXED! I have turned in over 7,500 points today alone! (By midnight whether it updates fast enough I might even have 9,000+) Sweet huh? Thanks for the help everyone in trying to track down these annoying problems. I updated the sticky with the fixes for all of this so nobody else has trouble.
One last question. Because I am using that cmdow program to hide the SMP program, it hides it too well. I can't get it to unhide so I can stop the program using Control+C. Can anyone tell me how to change the unhide .bat file to redirect it to the C:\\FAH folder instead of the default?

Just checking, you have the unhide.bat file in the same directory as cmdow?

Yeah it's in the same folder. I opened it up in notepad, (the unhide.bat) and it says this:
cmdow.exe "C:\Program Files\Folding@Home Windows SMP Client V1.01\fah.exe" /VIS
Shouldn't it have something about C:\\FAH?? I made a folder called C:\\FAH in my C drive so its easier to find everything. How do I change the bat files to recognise that?
P.S. I should have a 9,000+ point increase today. Once I get all these new PCs fixed with the correct data for SMP, I am thinking I will have around 12,000ppd on average! WOOT!

Btw as well, I see I'm on the top of your threat list :santa:. Don't believe the PPD difference. It says I'm almost 9K PPD, but in reality, due to the chip challenge drop-off, I'm pulling about 15K PPD. I've got 4 quads and 1 dual core AMD laptop working for me. :burn:

Take a look at my actual points being turned in... The weekly average has not caught up to my increase in points. I'm currently at over 10,000ppd and climbing (hopefully to at least your 15,000). You may catch up eventually...but that could take months now or even years, heh heh :)

I have 3 more Dual-Core2 systems that I need to fix that should give me about 5,000 extra ppd as well as an extra dual-core at work that is on temporary loan.
Yesterday wasn't that good for you it looks like, only 5K turned in. Might want to hurry it up. It went from 2.3 weeks yesterday to 2 weeks to overtake this morning. :)

I had some problems... I bought a new Wireless N router and it had some extra security BS that some of the PCs in my house didnt like. Also, a few of the PCs that I borged had to go back to thier owners and it looks like they are not leaving them on like I asked them.
Finally I bought a HUGE 8800 GTS 512Mb video card and stuffed it into my main Quad PC to play some games and my system was down over a day while I figured out how to get it in there. Thanks for looking out for me!
