I called my local computer shop about some ram, the PC8500... he kinda chuckled at me and said their is no such REAL speed. That its made up by memory makers. This can't be true...

Tell him to register on here and link this thread :D
There is no way they are "false", they are RATED to run that speed. I don't see why he thinks otherwise. Maybe ask him why he thinks this, he may be confused or read something wrong, no idea. He may even be referring to something completely different. Maybe I'm wrong

He's probably just a little outdated, I'd give the guy a break he works on PCs for a living which is different than for a hobby. ;) I'm sure he wa talking about JEDEC standards not memory module maker's speed ratings. The standards initially only went up to DDR2-667 I believe, note that's 1:1 with Intel's highest FSB, but other standards have been established since then.

He is true in a way. There are no real standards for PC8500. Every PC8500 stick out there is really a PC6400 stick overclocked to PC8500. This is for DDR2 not sure about DDR3. This is another way how people rip us off. I am just mad nothing can be what it says. Also there is not a huge difference between PC6400 and PC8500 speeds I would just stick with PC6400.

So the ram I linked above would be a waste of my money?

So the ram I linked above would be a waste of my money?I could think of at least 10 things worse to spend your money on.
Whether it is a "waste" is up to you.

Just to add to that,
Not all PC6400 sticks will run at PC8500 speed, if you do buy PC8500, you know it will run at that speed and the timings listed and maybe more.

It is not a waste it is just PC6400 memory overclocked to PC8500. When you get the memory you will see. Also like the other guy said some PC8500 memory will go higher than PC8500 speeds but with proper cooling. Look at price difference between PC6400 and PC8500 cause there is no difference pretty much its all the same. Usually the cheaper PC6400 memory can't be overclocked.

Yeah, it's pretty much PC6400 guaranteed to run at 1066 at least. I run mine at 1000. It's built to take it alot better than regular PC6400 though.
My Corsair XMSII PC6400 RAM wouldn't go ANY higher than 950, and with slow timings too. I'm happier with my Kingston PC8500 over the Corsair PC6400 any day. I still have the Corsair as backup though.

Corsair and crucial just aint what they use to be in terms of quality. I remember buying nothing but corsair for my computers back in the day.

Why are you buying new RAM anyway?

Moving Upto A Intel Quad Core

I use to have an AMD myself but moved up to a q6600. My games are loving it and I couldn't be happier. Got it overclocked to 3.0ghz stable for 24/7 use on stock voltage. Stays very cool as well. Hope you were looking at this chip.

Moving Upto A Intel Quad CoreIf you're getting a Q6600, then there's really no need to get RAM faster than what you have (PC2-6400). You'll be lucky to hit 400x9, and even then the RAM will be running its rated speed with the 1:1 divider. Now if you go with a Q9300 there's more of a valid reason to get the faster RAM.

Q9300 was slower than a Q6600 last time I checked. Thats the low-end chip of the 45nm penryns. Less cache and less overclocking potential. Has only 6mb of cache where as the 6600 has 8mb. Even though the 9300 has a 1333fsb the 6600 can reach that on stock voltage.

Even though the 9300 has a 1333fsb the 6600 can reach that on stock voltage.I am aware of this. It doesn't change the fact that the faster RAM is more useful with a Q9300 than it is with the Q6600. The 8 multiplier on the Q9300 means that you'll need to run a higher FSB (400-450 MHz) to reach the same overclocked speeds as the Q6600. So unless you want to put your RAM on a slower memory divider (which is a perfectly viable option), the faster RAM comes in handy. Don't get me wrong though, I think it would be silly for most people to go with the Q9300 over the Q6600 right now unless they're planning only a moderate overclock, or unless they like a good challenge.

Don't forget the q9300 is at a ridiculous price for what it is.
