coming from a PC racing junky......

Well played the Demo last night...I LOVE IT!!! Finally a good racing game!! With all the goodies...

Awsome scale of speed, physics are pretty darn good, the damage system is the best I've seen.

The cars actually race with you, making mistakes and messing with you. Grphx are really cinimatic, with the SIM feel of the cars is a great mix.

I've enjoyed all CodeMasters racing games, this is the best (for the type of racing).
Looks like the same kinda of campaign style as NFS highstakes..with the money and damage repair and racing for free cars etc.etc.

Instant replay is neat. The full replay is darn good...very cinimatic and a joy to watch yourself race with such effects and graphx.

The sound is top notch. Very clean and crisp, impacts are nice and crisp. very good job on the sound. Grate models for the cars. The wheels actually mesh with the pavement really well. A bit of clipin when body damage around the wheel..no big deal.

Great control setup. Nice force feedmback and such...using my 7yr old Logitch Formula extreme..no problems....great control of the car. Deadzones are easy to adjust...even ingame.

I thougt the gear change sound was a bit to binkie, but hey, great impression for a demo. THis game is mine on realese.

Another fine job by Codemasters (pretty good quality game developer)

Agreed, this game looks to be killer. I tried the demo on my PS3 and was very impressed. The game is really intense, gets your heart going. I especially love the damage, the replays, and the awesome sound effects.

Only thing I can gripe about is the during the replays the camera angle snad views are fixed. So everytime you go around a corner on a certain map the camera angle will always be the same.

I've always liked random angles at any given time...but that only a small deal. all around the game is well done...well of course it is, it's done by CodeMasters.

I noticed a wierd bug too. Doesnt seem to save the custom setup I used for my wheel, and I would have to "redo" at least one setting again between races or else the game wouldnt recognize my wheel anymore.

I noticed that it doesn't save my assist settings or display (like km/h vs mph).

I also have a HUGE stuttering problem, the first two races didn't have it, but the one with the muscle cars do. I will pull less than 1fps if I look behind me and then it "catches up" by going really fast. I couldn't even finish the race as it started doing >1 fps just normal driving.

EVEN with that in mind, I'm buying this game...absolutely AMAZING. Drifting blew my mind. I was having so much fun that I had forgot what a really good racing game felt like. Just wow Codemasters...wow. I might buy 5 copies, it is that good.

Definitely an ASUS thing. That said, I love the game! I don't think I've done a San Fran course since.. wow its been so long I can't remember the name of the game! I can max the settings at 1920*1200, too. I hope the full game doesn't force me to bring down a lot. I thought DiRT looked great but seemed to demand too much horsepower for what it was giving back. Still, I've played that three times.. GRID: SOLD!!

Frogbones
05-19-08, 09:35 AM
I notice I have to go to my controls and hit the ctrl key then back out of the control and my pedal works. On startup of the game if I go into a race rightaway I have no throttle.

But I do the whole enter controls menu, act like I'm goint to edit..back out and all works....must be a demo thing..hope it a demo thang.

Still sold though.

Anways I had a really bad reck...and the effects of me wasting my car was really neat. The whole bloodshot effect and the way things slow down...brought back bad memories/feelings of actual car recks that I've experienced.....that was the icing on the cake just awesome!

Codemasters have done thier homework and put out an excellent demo...game. Much props...

Just got the demo... and uninstalled the demo. I was VERY disappointed in this game, and it's lack of support of a proper wheel. I have a G25 and I could not find support for my shifter or clutch. On top of that the steering response was crap, and the overall feel is still way too arcade like for my taste. Other than that it LOOKS amazing... but looks only get you so far.

Thank you Codemasters for reminding me why I play LFS.

Hardin

Yes it's built on an upgraded version of the dirt engine.

nightelph
05-25-08, 08:32 PM
Thats what I expected. The engine seems very capable. From the demo it seems they've been able to tweak it some, DiRT ran slower than it should per given hardwrare, imo. Framerate seemed to scale very well as cpu speed went from 3.0-3.6ghz. Only at that speed was I really able to run everything maxed at 19x12.

The game looks awesome, runs great (even at 1920 x 1200 with 8xaa, everythign on high) and is a BLAST to play! I can't stop playing the demo! The muscle car race is great.

Hats off to codemasters. I loved dirt, but the whole time I was playing it, I was praying they would make a non off-road racing game. My prayers have been answered. Def will be buying this as soon as it's released....when is it coming out anyways? I'd look it up, but I'm off to play the game some more :D I'll try to get some screen shots, no one has posted any yet.

That's why I'm so disappointed in this. They billed it as the mix of both that we have all been wanting. Polished look, but sim feel. I mean seriously, how hard would it have been for them to support clutches and gated shifters? They are becoming the norm. Even bargain wheels have clutches now. I would think it it really is going to support it then it would have been in the demo. That's not something that just gets added for the full version.

BTW, no mouse support in menus? Can we please not just get another port of a console version?

I really had high hopes for this game, and will still see what the word is when the full version comes out, but for now my heart lies with LFS even if it doesn't look as good.

Wheels with a clutch are far from the norm. And by bargain wheels, do you mean the <$100 models that are lucky to even have Force Feedback, much less pedals to begin with, or the "bargain" >$150 wheels (about $250 for the current best bang for your buck model), since there are only a few that even have a clutch, and even fewer racing games that support a full clutch + gated shifter.

Its billed as a mix of a Sim and Arcade racer because you dont have to get so in depth with it like you would a sim, but at the same time, the vehicle wont run around the track like an Arcade racer. I agree, it would be nice for the support, but I think its overkill to have a clutch for this game for the audience they are targeting.

Wheels with a clutch are far from the norm.

There was some cheap "NASCAR" wheel that had a clutch. I'm sorry, but sense getting my G25 I don't really shop wheels anymore. The gated shifter is the thing you won't see often, but is not an issue with a properly set up game that allows you to set buttons for each gear. Then you have the option of "shift up/down," or "this is first, second, third..."

Support of the G25 should have been a no brainier as they are becoming more and more common. The controller works for both the PC and PS3 so it would have killed 2 birds with one stone. Personally I don't see any excuse for them not giving it proper support to fully fill the "Sim side of what they were claiming.

Its billed as a mix of a Sim and Arcade racer

The only "sim" I have seen in this game having played it now are the real cars. The physics suck as do the inputs when compared to proper sims.

As I said, i haven't totally given up on this game as these may just be demo growing pains, but I am fearing another NFS Bling style title. If the game had not been built up in the manner it has I would not have issue with these things. Then again I wouldn't have considered buying it either.

Frogbones

Well not all PC racing games can please all. Espeacially how some take PC racing really HC

I think it's a good mix of both. Without all the jazz about car setup and tweaks and such......I'm in that kinda of mood I have LFS or NASCAR SEASON 2003. If want a "bling" race game that focuses on the "race" and "fun" (with damage intergrated) I now have this game.

I'm sorry, did I ever state an opinion of DiRT? I just stated that i did not play it due to the issues I was hearing about it not being as realistic as I would like. I DID play this demo, and stated my opinions based off that first hand experience.

But what I'd really like to see is an e-brake lever

I have toyed with the idea of taking a real handbrake and wiring one of the extra buttons on the G25 shifter (8 buttons and the d pad to choose from) to the brake light button on it. Then I will have a real handbrake for drifting and such that is essentially a momentary push button on the controller. Don't see why it wouldn't work.
