I just found a bunch of my old sierra games (space quest series, kings quest series, etc.). I was having trouble running the msdos games in windows xp. The game starts, but then it locks up before it does anything... Is there some kind of dos emulator or something? Any ideas or solutions would be great. Thanks!

My games aren't *that* old but I do have Warcraft2, Starcraft, Fallout 1 and 2 that I still play. To get them working properly I make the setup or install run in compatibility mode too. When you run the game also set that on compatibility mode.
Starcraft no longer has that stupid pingout thing under bnet going this way. Fallout is playable, not sure if the game had tones of bugs or its the OS. Prolly both. War2 plays w/out a hitch.
Right click the icon and click the compatiblity tab and try to run it off a different OS base.
Windows XP is known not to run older dos games too well as well as Win2K since their NT Kernal.

The best option for getting WinXP to play old games is to duel boot with Win98 SE. XP just won't run some of the older games.
I think some of those games work in DOS so you can install the game then use a DOS boot disk to get into and run them from DOS there.
To make the boot disk get into command prompt or DOS and type format a: /s. This is assuming that your floppy drive is A: and you have a blank or soon to be blank floppy in it.

Installing a dual boot of Windows 98 when Windows XP is already installed will cause problems.
Plus he will have to either fdisk if he's only on one drive and using a NTFS partition.

heh he can't fdisk with out formating or losing all his data, dual boot is nowhere near easier...IMHO he would need partion magic
Dingo I realise that fdisking will require a format after.
The dual boot process is pretty long and tiring and it is lots for just dos games (-:
When doing something like a Windows install I like to do everything fresh nothing like converting or anything with Partition Magic.

running the compatibility mode is much more simplier than doing a format/fdisk of the drive.... its not reasonable IMHO, just for a DOS game....;)
I think you guys are missing the whole point. Yes, compatibility mode is the best shot for running old stuff without dual booting, but i think the point to get at is this. Is there a 3rd party emulator for DOS that runs in winxp? Like emulating a nintendo, only with dos. I would also like to see something like this, as there are, on occasion, old games that are fun to play. With this in mind, has anyone heard of an emulator you can download that will do a better job of dos, than the nt kernel?

I got Heroes II to run on XP, but not Max Payne. Go figure. I think it might have something to do with my Voodoo though.

I have the same problem. I just got Daggerfall (Elder Scrolls 2) at a goodwill store but now I cant play it. I have tried the compatability option, with no luck. I have tried a winxp dos bootdisk.. but it wouldnt read the CD-Rom. I tried a win98 SE dos bookdisk but it wouldnt let me use mouse, and it couldnt detect my nfts hardrive. Does anyone have any other ideas? I can get the game to run, but it says I need to install it. The install file will open up the command prompt in xp, but the cursor will just sit there and blink :(. Thank you :D

Well I was hoping to find a site that I used to use. It had a list of most of the older games and individul solutions about how to run those in NT or XP. I can't find it now. I am curious so I will probably keep looking. Good Luck.
