I'd just like to say.....I disagree completely and leave it at that. I think Seti is one of the greatest organizations in existence. Once I can contribute something meaningful, I hope to add some processing power to our Seti team.

Millions of watts, millions of CPU cycles wasted for a feat such as this? Wouldn't it be better to waste the energy on something more meaningful?
as in ?
and just to clearify , Seti was actually formed by Capt Kirk , like all leaders they get lazy as they get older and have other people do their work for them , its called delegating Authority
What do you waste your cycles on? or are they just wasted?

OK... Sorry, just tried to make and intelligent discussion by getting to the core idea of SETI. Looks like opposite views aren't welcome.
first, why the hate?
why would God create a universe a vast as it is for one meaningless little planet like earth? out of a 100 million galaxy's that each have 100 million stars like our sun, and a million of those have a planet like our earth, well you do the math. why all this for one little planet that has life? the universe is thought to be 13 billion years old, our solar system is around 4.5 -5 billion. we been here what 200-100,000 years, wow. it's no doubt even if they did find a signal, we could never do anything because of the vast distance from one star to another as we can travel now. but we'll not always be as ignorant as we are now, or will we?

You won't find your answer here. Ask yourself why you dedicate your cycles to whatever it is you've choosen and then ask yourself what you'd say to someone who tells you you're wasting your time ;)
You do make a logical argument but, in my mind if ET exists he knows far more about the universe and how it works than our current less than childlike perception allows. Look how far man has come in 100 years, if we survive our stupidity mankind will be nothing short of an astonishing species in another millennia.

To answer your question, I crunch for SETI mainly because I really really like the BOINC client. I also crunch because it's fun to see the relative computing performance between various machines, it's fun to mess around with the optimized clients, and it's something to have my computers doing.

Do you believe the Moon Shots were a waste ...???

Because Aliens:
1. May provide the cure for cancer.
2. May provide the solution to human corruption.
3. May be crunchy and taste good with catchup.
And if we don't look for them, we will never know if they are out there.

I lol'd. Nice reasons mate :p
I personally crunch because I find the science behind it very interesting. Ive always been interested in astronomy, and on a slight side note, I find the SETI community to be a great friendly bunch that really makes you wanna crunch that extra unit, squeeze that extra 1 RAC out of our machines... Yummy

I run SETI as a dedication to the memory of Carl Sagan. He alone is more than enough of a reason to run SETI in my opinion.

Pointless thread.
Crunch SETI if you want, it's all in the name of fun, team building and scientific interest :)
