View Full Version : 2 WD Caviar in RAID 0 or 1 Raptor?

Kinda new to RAID, but very curious in playing around with it if its worth it.
Would it be faster for games and o/s if I used 2 WD Caviar 160GB drives in RAID 0 or is it just eadier and more effiecnt to get a 74GB Raptor?

Raid is awsome. I had raptors, but too much noise made me give them up.

Raid has it's pros and cons. If you're not comfortable setting up raid, then I would go with the single drive method.

well right now im not too knowlegable on the topic. but if RAID 0 is a good choice i would gladly research my ass off until i was ready. I always enjoy learning new things and it would save me some money. Do u happen to know any good links or tutorials i should chaeck out?

We have a good sticky here. You'll learn a lot from it. And IMO, I'd rather go with RAID than any of those raptors. :)

I was in a similiar dilemma when I was buying my rig. I went with the 150GB raptor for my OS drive, but in retrospec I would have rather had more storage + raid.

320GB in raid outweighs slightly better performance and 1/4 the storage space to me.

My 2 cents.

I'm saving for 2 640GB WD's now.

It would be easier, more efficient, and faster for both games and OS to use a Raptor.

If you don't need the storage of a huge drive, it's a way better solution.


They are loud though. Not crazy loud, and it's only when seeking, but they do make a crunch noise. It isn't the worst thing in the world, think of a typical hard drive ten years ago, same as that.


They're wihsper quiet at idle.
