View Full Version : Hello again and a Question
Hey,
Just wanted to say hello again, haven't been posting for a while or even lurking. So here is one for all of you.
And now for the question... :santa: I was wondering if there was any way to run bionic on a computer that isn't attached to the internet?? I have a machine at work that I use to trade with and it is a monster and would love to run seti on it. (don't worry it is my computer and can do what I like, just they keep it off the internet so you can't infect the network) Anyhow, is there a way to run it on a USB drive or something? I have three computers next to me so it would be easy to go back and forth to a computer that is on the internet.
HELP!!!:santa:
I'm 99.9% positive you can't send WUs from one computer to another. I'm sure you can find some other threads either here or on the seti@home forums explaining why, but there's a quick answer.

dang, that is what i thought i remembered... will search some more in a bit.
I tried a few searches and just came up with this, http://www.ocforums.com/showpost.php?p=5627787&postcount=15
Not much, but eaglescouter knows his stuff. If I remember correctly boinc assigns the WUs to the host/machine number, and only that machine can process it.

Is there a way to manually send the results , so if you connect for like 5 minutes and totally raise your upload to your max , Can you manually send?
If you raise the amount of work you download to 10 , do all the work , manually connect to send and replenish your work load , can that be done?

Thats one of the things I love about BOINC - you absolutely can do that :) If you get really desperate, you can even request 20days of work (10+10) by using preference override in the newer BOINCs. However, this isnt always advisable, unless you are absolutely certain it can in fact crunch 20days of WU before the deadline.
so how do I manually connect? didn't think about this one. I am going to try to plug in another computers cat5 which can get to the internet but beyond that I have no clue.
Thanks!

Unless I have misinterpreted the question, you can manually connect to berkeley by going to the BOINC manager under the projects tab, highlighting SETI@home and clicking update. Thatll send a request to the server to update your pc's status - report finished WU, replenish cache, update any preferences (*unless you use override preferences), etc.
So, you could easily use the override prefs to set a 20day WU cache, download the WU (might take a while), then let it do its thing. Come back in a couple of weeks time, click update and BOINC will do its thing :)
If this doesnt answer your question, sorry, I may have read it wrong ^^

Thanks! As to how you can physically connect I have no idea. That would depend a lot on the network situation and security you have to deal with.
In SETI you can go the "Activity" drop-down and set "Suspend Network Activity" to stop the machine from interacting on it's own ...

I have NO access to the internet via that computer. I don't know how tech locked us out of the internet on that computer via windows or the switch/router in the back. I was going to plug in a wire from another one of my computers to see if I can get on the internet with that. If I can then I will just do that every so often.
Sorry if I wasn't clear on that.
Can I run bionic off a USB drive?

Yes. AFAIK BOINC will accept any drive letter/path you want to give it. But you might really screw something up if you don't stop BOINC before disconnecting the USB drive it's installed on ...

Ah right, my bad. According to OCF I was posting that "help" at 2am last night. *shrugs* Apparently its 3:16am atm! wth? No wonder Im beginning to get tired o.O. Remind me never to start a 3000word essay on a heavily theoretical linguistic topic 16hours before its due in.
Anyway, as QIce has said, it should work.. I mean if you can crunch diskless, Im sure you can do the ol switch-a-roo on a USB drive and shove it over.
The only thing Im worried about is the fact that technically the pc you're reporting from isnt going to be the same, so it might not accept it. Good luck!

no problem, looks like for me to do it I would have to go to the trouble of putting the other cable in and changing the network settings which is too much trouble for me to do all the time.
Would be fun to see how fast this thing would do some units but don't know that it is worth it. Maybe I will try tomm since it is a half day and Mon is off.

Depending on the connected computer it may be as simple as plugging in a cable and assigning a proxy address. But if your admin's are anywhere near as retentive as ours I doubt that would be enough. You may get outgoing to work OK but incoming would probably be stopped by the firewall. :(
Too bad you can't get your hands on a mobile Internet device for 15-20 minutes a week - that should be time enough to upload and download the work.

I didn't expect the USB to be moved to another machine - I don't think that would work either. But it would keep all the SETI stuff off the work HDD, which is why I assumed is what Cuper was asking ... ;)
