Oni, there's always Google and Wikipedia.
Anyways, my impressions;
The game has a few bugs in it (especially after it's newest update of a new HUD, new lag compensation, etc). But overall, the gameplay is just like Quake III Arena with all the competitive maps.
I can't wait until this goes offical; it's going to be huge. Considering it has low system requirements, it's free, and most of all it's fun.
The only thing I see wrong with this game is the steep learning curve. If you join any kind of Quake Live TX Duel server you're going to get annihilated.
If you guys want me to take some screenshots, I'd be happy to.

So are there ANY improvements from Quake 3? i.e. any reason not to just dig out my Quake 3 discs and not have to watch ads?

Graphics: No, same as Quake III.
Gameplay: Weapon damages are a little different, Rail gun only does 80 dmg instead of 100 dmg, etc.
The ads aren't that noticeable, we aren't talking about Need For Speed Underground or anything.

Yeah that would be cool, I would like to see it in a browser window and all. Can you change the resolution or is it set?

Yeah, but if it's Quake 3 and I already own Quake 3, then is there anything that might actually tempt me to download it?

The ability to play Q3 from a webbrowser at work... not that I would ever commence in such a action :santa:

Well, you can't just go and download it; you need an invite.
The biggest thing is having a huge community once it's official. Q3 is pretty dead .. unless you go into IRC channels and play CPMA / OSP.

mm how will it run so efficiently via a browser? isnt that alot of data to send back and forth
>HyperlogiK<

I don't think Quake 3 requires a lot of bandwidth even new online games aren't huge bandwidth hogs.

true.. q3 is pretty old isnt it

Well, once you download the Plugin for Firefox or IE .. you still have maps / game data to download. It's a vacuum sealed Quake III if you will.

A word of warning, I played a lot of Q3 back in the day, but the only people playing Quake Live are the most hardcore of hardcore. If Quake 4 didn't prove that Quake 3 gameplay was dead, this is the last nail in the coffin.
If you can find a server with someone on it, prepare to be stomped. Not worth the trouble, IMO, but a cool proof-of-concept! I'd love to see Call of Duty or some other games based on Q3 in there, or maybe slimmed down versions of some modern games that are, you know, relevant.
I doubt to all hell that my work PC is powerful enough to actually run it, but it is an incredibly interesting concept. Maybe when I finally get a better PC we can all take part in some workplace fragging . . . :)

@Springbok, I think Quake 4 merely proved that bad single player, appalling rendering of outdoor scenes and a poorly optimised engine aren't a recipe for success.
I hope that Quake Live and the new free Battlefield game might kickstart a renaissance in PC gaming and shift it away from the Crysises' of this world. How likely that is I'm not sure, but it might always attract a few console gamers who would otherwise spend their lunch hour browsing porn or playing bejewelled.

How long does the invite take to process? signed up 4 days ago and still have nothing in my mail. Is it for non free mail services only?
I just signed up for the demo now. We'll see if I get in.
I personally consider Quake III to be the pinnacle of the Online FPS. Often imitated but never duplicated. Fast-paced action with zero BS. No vehicles, only two power-ups (3 if you count the Megahealth), great guns and just enough gore.

Signing up is a whole other ballgame versus getting an invite.
I can probably find one of you an invite (which takes like 9 - 12 days to process :bang head), then you guys can spread it amongst yourselves.
