ok. here are both machines.
A. ECS K7S5A AMD 1600+ onboard LAN SiS 900 Fast Ethernet
WinME (mine)
B. Acorp 7KTA AMD 900 (UN-O/C'd) 3Com 10/100 (3C905B-TX)
WinME (kids)
I have Cat5e run under the house (cross-over)

neither puter will see each other. I tried both WinGate and MinME Network Setup Wizard.

I also have tried the Diamond Homefree Phoneline NIC's with the included software... again NO GO

On my previous machine (machine B above) I had network setup up with a NEC V166e, and it worked fine, just SLOOOOOOOW.

The software I used to set it up came from the Diamond kit, was kinda nifty, and very easy to use (did all the work, I just had to run it) until now. Someone shed any light please?

Getting a REAL NIC might help.... Just a thought

I really don't think the onboard lan is a problem on your motheboard. It is more likely to be a software problem.

My K7S5A was a flawless integration into my network.

There are a lot of other issues, none of which am I an expert on, that are involved. You need to install the appropriate protocalls and bindings, that is about as far as I can take you...

However, I am sure that there are others her that can help you!

What is your operating system?

make sure the 2 ip addresses are the same ex. 10.1.10.xx just change the last two numbers. Right click on network neighborhood>click properties>then click on the TCP/IP protocol for your nic and click properties> then click specify ip address for example
Machine A: 10.1.10.25
Machine B: 10.1.10.20
let windows enter the subnet mask then click ok. by the way if you don't have microsoft client for network sharing installed then the computers won't see each other...

I thought I listed my O/S in my post, both are running WinME

ok, here's the latest....
I pulled the 3com 10/100 from the back machine, put it in the new one, disabled onboard LAN, installed the Etherlink III 10mbs card in the back room.

I set it up through windows network wizard, no go....

I then also tried the Home Networking CD, and yet again, no go... I am getting very disturbed over it....

First verify your cable works. Take a look at lights on the network cards. If you're getting a green light they're connected.

Then move on to the software. Set up unique IP addresses for each machine. Open up a command prompt, use ping to see if you can reach the other computer. Example:

Your PC: 192.168.1.10
Other PC: 192.168.1.20

Type in at the command prompt:
ping 192.168.1.20

If it fails it'll say "Request timed out."

If it works it'll say "Reply from 192.168.1.20..."
At this point you know the PCs are making contact, its just a matter of getting Windows to recognize the other PC. Make sure both PCs are in the same workgroup. Install NetBIOS and NetBEUI and client for microsoft networks and whatever else you think might get it to work. Good luck!

 TEMPER TEMPER!!!

Death became of my 3Com 10/100 by a tragic, yet forcefully fall into my driveway!

well, now comes my 3Com Therlink III ISA in the Acorp board.

I totally restarted.. Made NEW cat5e (cross-over) and installed an LED onto my MoBo in the Link light jumper. (yes, the cable is good, and the light also lights when plugged in on both ends). Went into Networking properties and removed everything, so that there wasnt anything in the box, AND the network adapters (even disabled it in the bios). AOL automatically reinstalled its Adapter's, did the shut-down and restart thing I know 5000 times.

tried it manually, using 198.162.0.1(Main) 198.162.0.2(kids), and subnet 255.255.255.0(windows selected) for both.

I have a manual written for windows networking, also cross-checked it. and still, no go(but I have this cute little Green LED laughing at me saying "I'm Connected" . Each computer see's themselves, but not each other.

If I could please get someone to call me, I would appreciate it. I have a phone by both machines, and they are close enough to be quick. Please email me for my number (HarrodsburgComp@aol.com) I will be up all night, and will gladly wait...

Its a simple thing, but have you shared anything on one of the pcs?

Also, what are the results from ping?

I've set up networks with many oses, but not WinME, but I have heard that ME is not as network-friendly as NT, 2000, XP, or even Win98se.

you have to make sure that you have file and print sharing enabled on the computers otherwise they won't see each other.

Sounds like he's having the same problems I was, roger. Tell him whatever you told me and that should make it work. :D

Puter_Addict: Are you using a firewall? ZoneAlarm gave me some trouble at first. ICS also fragged a couple of things. You haven't mentioned using that, but it could be part of the problem if you are.

I had to play around in the Network section of Control Panel. Had to set the IPs there manually for the first two machines (I think you said you'd already tried this). After my initial problems, I'm now able to drop machines in and out with no problems at all using the Wizard on new ones, so at least it is *possible* to get it to work.

If you're still trying with the Wizard, try selecting no internet connection for each machine. That was a big hangup on mine. Also, as roger mentioned above, try sharing My Documents (or something like that) on each machine. If you can get them to recognize each other first, adding in ICS is easier (for me, anyway).

FYI, I'm running through a hub, but I don't see how that could make mine work any better than yours.

using a home network, the pic below shows the clients and protocols that NEED to be installed...( "family logon" isn't needed, but is easier to use for kids, from my experience anyway... when there is more than a single user, it shows a list of users and lets them easily click on their username and then enter their password) Also, make sure both computers are in the same "Workgroup" but have different "Computer Names" and that the folders or drives you want to share are indeed being shared...( the little hand under them?)

You don't even need NetBeui

just ipx or tcp ip should do it!! ;)

OK, fresh start. We are all going of on a little tangent here!!!

Here we go:-

a) Verify your CAT5 and network cards are connected and the cable is a crossover and your link lights are on

b) Get rid of AOL - reinstall it later. Install networking. Only add in TCP/IP - NOTHING ELSE

c) Assign the PC's an IP address (10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2, net mask 255.0.0.0 for both)

d) Apply and reboot both

e) Click start, run, type command or cmd depending on your OS (command for ME). Type ping 10.0.0.1 - hit enter. You should get a reply four times. Type ping 10.0.0.2 - hit enter. You should get a reply four tiimes. If that works, both cards work and are connected fine.

LET ME KNOW IF THIS WORKS, THEN...........

f) Go back into networking. Add in Client for Microsoft Networks (it should be there anyway as TCP/IP suite installs it. Add in File and Print Sharing. Apply and reboot. Do this on both PCs

g) Go back into networking, and identification (where your PC name is) and select that your PC is in a WORKGROUP and NOT a DOMAIN. Type in a name in the workgroup box. This MUST be the same on both machines. Apply and reboot

h) You can then start to share files and printers

LET ME KNOW THE OUTCOME!!!

Good Luck
