i have a ultra 500w power supply. will this psu handle a 3850 video card. and what does a 3850 video card compare to in nvidia graphics cards? by the way it has 34amps on the 12volt rail.

Yes, Your good to go. the 3850 is like a NV 8800 GT, when OC'ed I score 9850 in 3dMark06, with mine and a e2140@3.0mhz. Also I run it on a weak TT430 I got on sale for 9 bucks, If the rebate ever comes...sigh

Actually the 3870 is closer to the 8800GT. I think the 3850 is more towards the 9600GT. 34A should be more than enough to handle the card.
