View Full Version : Xbox 360 or PS3?

I cannot make a decision.
PS3: BluRay capabilities, Gran Turismo 5, newer.
Xbox 360: All of my friends play online on this particular system, more games, cheaper, etc.
I'm mainly buying a console just for GTA4 / Cod4 .. both consoles have these games.:bang head
What should I get?
Come on. You don't want to be that kid who has to play GTA4 or COD4 alone on PSN instead of being on XBL.
I'd recommend a PS3 over a 360 if your friends played that, but you really don't want to be left out. Plus if you end up really liking GTA there's the downloadable content coming this summer for the 360.

As a ps3 nuthugger, I will favor the ps3. However, in your case, get the xbox.
PS3 does have blu-ray, but you only want it for gaming. You only want 2 games, GTA4, and COD4. ALL your friends are on xbox Live. You will probably get a more enjoyable experience if you stick to xbox since you can play with your friends.
Xbox does have more games, however i'm not too sure they are "cheaper". But just don't freak out that you have to renew your xbox live membership every year for $50.

No you did not.
Depends what you consider cheaper. The base price, for a 20gb Xbox, yes. Factor in things like XBL, Wifi, play n charge kits, and stuff like that and it really adds up to be more than a PS3.
As for friends, I went into getting one with no friends that had a PS3. Now most of my friends do, and its our system of choice. Playing alone also isn't bad. Sometimes I prefer it :) Besides, you will always make friends online.
If GTA, CoD4, GT, and movie watching (Blu Ray and upscaling dvds) are your thing, then probably PS3 for the fact that online play is free. If friends are the absolute cornerstone of your gaming experience, and you can't go without them, 360.

PS3, no charges for online multiplayer.
A 20gig 360 with a years subscription to Gold and the worlds most expensive wireless internet is about £20 cheaper than the 40gb PS3 in the UK.
So, by the second year the PS3 is actualy cheaper, and comes with a bigger drive, that can be made even bigger for much cheaper than the 360.
The 360 has the bigger back catalogue, but that only really matters if you care about playing old games.

Yeah and Xtreme doesn't live in the UK. :)
Here in the U.S. the PS3 is cheaper in the FIRST year. With a year's worth of Xbox Live that is. And you wind up with a cheaper hard drive, a list of current generation games that's virtually identicle to the 360's (except that the PS3 will have Gran Turismo 5 in a few months and MGS4 next month), and an online service that's likely to remain free.
That and you get a pretty interesting web browser that you can use to download videos... you can also playback flv files directly from the PS3's video section (perfect if you've "gathered" a bunch of them from somewhere). You can watch, read, or listen to RSS and podcasts. You can install folding @ home or any one of five flavors of Linux.
Then there's all the other stuff everyone already knows.
Basically you can do MORE with the PS3. I've used almost every feature (except Linux) and found some creative uses at that. (Oh, and a lot of people forget it has a built-in wi-fi adapter whereas the 360 adapter costs $99.)

Oh, well, in that case then.
I'm still a bit worried the PS3 is going to be the ugly sister of the current generation, but havent spotted any sales figures recently.

the PS3 will have Gran Turismo 5 in a few months
I thought they were saying sometime in 2009, or later then that? I'm really doubtful GT5 will be released this year.
OP since you're a huge GT fan, I suggest you get the GT5 Prologue right now. It only has about 70 cars or so and six tracks (that I've seen) but it's a decent racing game, I'm having fun with it. The in-dash view is pretty sweet, and supposedly they will be adding some downloadable add-ons to it in August of this year. Additionally it has online play.
The PS3's web browser, imo, isn't all that great. It's getting better but I still feel it to be slow/clunky. Linux is kind of slow on the PS3, at least with KDE or Gnome. Xfce seems to run at a decent and usable speed. The PS3 is a ****ty computer since linux can only use 256 MB of RAM (and some of that goes to video), it's a much better game console slash blu-ray player. Linux is cool to mess around with, but if you get a 40 GB model trust me you'll soon want that 10 GB linux partition back if you play even a few games. GT5:P alone requires over 5 gigs of hard drive space.

If you look on Kijiji you can do better than that, I saw a 40GB PS3 with COD4 and GTA4 for $300CDN on Kijiji a couple of weeks back and I just got a barely used 'Falcon' 360 with a whole bunch of recent games, an HDDVD drive :) and a 4 HDDVDs for the same amount of money. You just need to be persistent if you are buying second hand.

The 40 GB isn't so bad, I guess it depends if you have any PS2 games or not, but for $300 used see if you can get a 60G or 80G unit. The 40 GB has been out and priced at $400 for at least six months now, $300 used is okay, but not great. Maybe if it came with a DS3 controller or some games. The 60G is still the best PS3 since it packs the actual PS2 hardware for backwards compatibility and has all of the options, I wish they still manufactured it.
I think it is worth it to play with your friends, thats just me, thats why I got an Xbox 360. Most of my friends have the 360.
Whats the point of paying for a gaming system at all if you are not going to do what you want to do, and that is playing with friends?

That's not actually true: The 40GB system is still backwards compatible with PS1 games (and before you go into the argument of "who plays those anymore?" you could make the same argument for PS2 games.) Not only that, you can stream those PS1 games to a PSP.
Besides that it has a modified cooling system, consumes less power, and features the 65nm chipset. (And is less likely to blow-up when you play GTA IV.

Why is it you ASS-ume that all his friends have a 360? How do you know they don't either have a PS3 or no game system at all?
Read the OP's first post... here ill quote it...
"Xbox 360: All of my friends play online on this particular system, more games, cheaper, etc."
I know I am the guy you love to hate but come on Rainless...

Because sometimes doing it the best is worth it. If all my my friends had Crappy Product B, that doesn't mean I would get it. If Good Product A is an option, I'd go with it over playing some games with friends. (Note: Not relating 360 to PS3 necessarily)
Who knows, his situation could end up like mine. The word spreads, and maybe his friends will get PS3s :)
All I can say is, if I bought a 360 because my friends did, I would deeply regret it, and question their judgment.
Well so far I am happy with my 360 and have no regrets.
You would question their judgement? Seems a little harsh. I guess all of us 360 owners have questionable judgement.
iaacp your anology does not work and I know you even admitted it, I just wonder why you said it at all.
The 360 is not a crappy product, we are talking two similar products with many of the same games. He mentioned one thing was important and I am telling him based on my experience that he should base his decision on what he deems important (friends) and not hope his friends also get PS3s.

Based on this comment in the original post:

The choice is clear in my opinion...360. Since the main reason for buying a console is to play GTA4 and COD4, and all of your friends have the xbox, then get a 360 because it's fun to play with/against your friends. I haven't seen COD4 on the PS3, but it's excellent on the 360. GTA4 looks the same to me on either console, except the 360 version shows some popup of bushes and such...oh well. They're both very fun.

I agree with the above unless you want to use the PS3 for folding like I do. I play the above mentioned games especially GTA4 a lot, but when I am at work or not playing, my PS3 is folding for Team 32. So it all depends on what else you want to use it for. I personally like the PS3 but I have never owned an Xbox 360 so I can't compare.

RRoD is like 0% chance if you get a Falcon core or newer etc. As an AVID GT fan from way back in the day Forza 2 does compare... and quite favorably I might add... Gimme a break folks I would rather get my hack n slash from Diablo 2 then boring as hell Heavenly Sword.

For one thing I would imagine it is taking them a long time to detail the dashboard/interior views of the 900+ cars GT5 is supposed to have. Have you played GT5:P in HD? IMO it looks noticeably better then GT4 in all areas, and despite what some people on this forum (whom haven't played the game) have touted the Prologue really is more then just a simple demo.

Yes, but it is priced like a full game release and contains little more content than most single episodic releases do. The fact that it was released at all indicates either tremendous greed or development trouble, and probably both.

I admit PSN is not the best thing in the world, but how is it like poop? Seriously, how is PSN like poop? Enlighten me please. You are making aruguments that doesn't make sense, with really nothing to back it up.
I'd be a lot more positive about the GT5 prologue if it were simply cheaper and/or offered a rebate with the purchase of the full version game.
The Forza games are really good racing games. I'm not gonna compare to a yet to be released GT5, but both are high quality racing games.
Don't be so sad Rainless man! Its all in good fun, I am being very tongue in cheek and sarcastic. I love to exagerate and I try to be humorous though it seems it is often lost on people focusing too much on my rediculous comparisons.
I told you it was a drunkin rant! I probably should not have posted at all in the state I was in last night... ok I was exagerating a lot about the Diablo 2 vs HS comment... I was just saying HS is a hack n slash, and that if I am going to play a hack n slash ill just go play D2 because D2 was fun.
Its a pain to communicate with friends on PSN, no in-game communication? How hard is that? XBL makes it super easy. That right there is a big deal for me.
Ok so maybe PSN is better than a free bag of poop! But Xbox Live really does outclass PSN. PSN is very barebones, it needs some work still, and I am sure Sony is working on it.
Don't get me wrong there are games for PS3 that I wish were coming for Xbox, MLB 08, MGS4 and possibly GT5 though like I said Forza 2 has really quenched my thirst for a good racing sim.

The implementation of XBL is better, but it's hard to swallow this vicious moneygrabbing that underlies it, especially when they are the only console provider stingy enough to charge.
Maybe if they had spent a little less on advertising Halo-bloody-3. A free online service would really be something to boast about, more so than that awful overrated shooter.
I think it is clear that in this case you get what you pay for. Would I like XBL to be free, of course, but if it meant I would lose some key features then I am not sure if it would be worth it.

That is one fact that I totally agree. The voice communciation is only available during in game, which I do find it annoying.
When compare XBL, there is no doubt XBL is definitely superior over PSN. However, XBL was created since the original xbox approximate 5 years ago, and they were already charging monthly fee since then. I believe the monthly fee was $9.99 a month. I'm not sure if there was any $50 a year sub fee during that time. They (very smart) already had a 4 - 5 year head start with XBL, plus the monthly fee to keep improving it. PSN pratically only started since the launch of PS3 and it is free. It will definitely take some time for them to catch up.
Just look at the PSP. You can even get skype phone on it today. I'm really hoping that they can (and will) improve PSN. It does have some catching up to do.
Who knows, Sony may come back and say," hey, it's free. So, shut up. Or we can start charging a subscription fee." I will be really **** if that happen.

Well, I'd say go with the 360. Why? Because that's what I bought, and I'm going to force my unfounded opinions on everybody else whether you asked for it or not, because I need to feel secure about my own decision to buy a product that I now second guess. Mkay? Great, I'm glad you'd see it my way. :p
In all honesty, though... I say "meh". Get the one that suits you best. At some point, you'll have to make the call. What's more important to you? Playing GTA4 and COD4 with your buddies? Or getting GT5? Personally, if you're a huge GT fan, I'd get a PS3... though, I wouldn't expect your friends to follow suit if they're happy with their 360's.
Sounds like you've already made the call... I'd just avoid listening to biased opinion (which we seem to have no shortage of around these parts). I'm honestly a little shocked nobody has popped their heads in yet to say "consoles suck... you should get a new video card". ;)

Actually they're releasing in game XMB in the very next patch, which should be next month. At that point there'll be virtually no difference between Xbox Live and PSN. Live has more users of course... for now.
Forza 2 is a great reason to buy a 360. It would be a must buy game if it wasn't bundled with it now. The driving is realistic and the multiplayer is the best part about it. There are still tons of people playing it even now. Including a large number of UK guys if you get on at the right time. And the developers still support it by releasing new car packs and tracks.

Suggesting that Xbox live is better because of the subscription fee is naive at best.
The vast royalties MS receives from every game sale can cover the cost of a permanent XBL dev team a thousand times over.
Look at the cellphone GPS market, Nokia charges a subscription for Nokia Maps, Route 66 don't for Route 66 (which is a vastly superior product).
Beyond certain extremes, the charging model has almost nothing to do with the quality of a product.
well let me put this as straight forward as possible, i have both the consoles
Controller: xbox360 > ps3, i hate the ps3 controller i wish i could find a way to use my 360 controller, besides one have to shed some extra money for dual shock 3 which comes with rumble, sixaxis is a feature which until and unless a game forces me to use i am not bothered with (personal preference) the only example comes to my mind ATM is Lair
Games: xbox360 > ps3 i bought ps3 for mgs4 only, but lately i have been impressed by looks and sounds of unchartered, brilliant game, GT5 Prologue is another game i have been playing like crazy. To keep the story short for cross platform games one is better off getting a 360, also 360 at the time have more exclusives than PS3
online: xbox360 > ps3 (market place is zillions time better than ps store in my opinion, plus they yet have to integrated xmbc or whateva in games)
multimedia: ps3 > xbox360, yes surprisingly i find it hell lot easier to plug in my devices and play media right off them, this was nearly impossible with xbox 360 courtesy of lack of codecs, bluray is another factor
hard drive: ps3> xbox360, one thing i like about ps3 is ability to easily swap hard drives at relatively lower cost, wish 360 had something like this, i have 80gb and its almost full
interface: i admit, ps3 have a good interface but blades of xbox 360 never gave me any problem, so its a tie between them
graphics: xbox360 > ps3, now don't get me wrong, i might be one of those oldies with weak eyesight, i saw vegas 2 giving jerks more than often so fps is an issue here, also ps3 does not upscale 720p games which SUCKS, gfx quality wise i don't think either console have an edge over the other.

well let me put this as straight forward as possible, i have both the consoles
Controller: xbox360 > ps3, i hate the ps3 controller i wish i could find a way to use my 360 controller, besides one have to shed some extra money for dual shock 3 which comes with rumble, sixaxis is a feature which until and unless a game forces me to use i am not bothered with (personal preference) the only example comes to my mind ATM is Lair
Games: xbox360 > ps3 i bought ps3 for mgs4 only, but lately i have been impressed by looks and sounds of unchartered, brilliant game, GT5 Prologue is another game i have been playing like crazy. I agree with everything except for the Codecs. The 360 has more Codecs. The 360 plays far more content off of my USB HDD without issues. I'm not sure if this is just me because of the DRM issue and me switching consoles when mine went *poof* but I have to be signed into LIVE to use all the Codecs or else it would APPEAR that the PS3 would play more but when connected to LIVE the 360 blows it away as far as codecs goes.

I have both systems as well, and I agree on everything except interface. I really like the 360s blades over the PS3 menu thing. I also love firing my 360 up and instantly getting that chirp and display with what friends are online. With little effort you can see what they are playing, what level they are on, whats new at the store, ect. Just an overall more user friendly interface. BluRay is cool for the PS3, but not as useful as I thought it would be. I'm a Netflix subscriber and watch alot of movies. 95% of the movies I watch are still are only available on DVD, and even if there's a BluRay option I still sometimes end up getting it on DVD anyway just so others in my household can watch it when and where they want since my PS3 is in my bedroom.
In my opinion the 360 is best HD gaming console option at this time. If MGS turns out good, one game is not enough to change the tide. By the time the PS3 catches up (if they do) in terms of games library and online features/usefulness the XBOX 720 will be out with the next generation of graphics capability.
