Ok so i was playing css, and the server changed maps and then this weird purple haze was on my grenade and on my guns and even on the other players. I took a screenshot and then i went to another map and it wasn't doing it then i went back to the map i was at and it was fine. Could it be an artifact????

i am not currently overclocking my EVGA 8800gts 512, i did a few months back use the "Find core max" in ati tool and i locked up. This is the only thing I have seen that was out of the ordinary.

oh also when i moved my mouse the purple color would move and change a bit, don't know if that helps..

HERE IS A PICTURE

any help is appreciated

The way I understand it, artifacts look like a light snow covering your display. Like when you get bad reception on a TV (when TV used to come in on antenna :) )What you see there is some kind of default texture put in by CSS when an error occurs or something. You occasionally see that texture in maps when textures for particular objects aren't found.

I could be wrong.

Yeah I would expect a light snow but that is not what this is. I think it might have just been CSS textures as you said.

Anyone else think differently.

Thanks for the reply :)

the Source engine is pretty bad about this, its a sign of a texture that wasn't loaded properly I believe.
It's a software problem, not a sign of hardware instability.
Alt + Tabbing a lot seems to sometimes cause it on my system.

Happens to me when I alt+tab. Sometimes purple/black checkers too.

Anyone know a fix other than restarting steam?

Purple/black checkers on steam games represent a missing texture or it failed to find it, even if you do have it. It occurs with me occassionally on garry's mod. So you say it looks like "snow"? I overclocked my two 8800gts SSC 512mb to 820 core, 2033 shader and 2300 memory and when playing games get the occassional red or purple pixel where it shouldn't be, my guess this is what an artifact is :P . However my games are still stable runing at this speed.

I get a black/purple checkerboard once in a while in TF2 when I've been alt-tabbing as well, looks somewhat similar to your issue. Definitely not a video card problem..

yes artifacts loook like snow or a straight line across your screen. The purple / texture problem is texture associated with the program nothing to do with the video card. Seems like alt + tab will do it.

you guys can agree with me that it wasn't an artifact correct?

this is what an artifactl ooks like :

haha yup thats definately a artifact....but i really dont think the purple haze is a artifact given that people can replicate it, try other games or FurMark to test stability to check if its the game or the overclock
