View Full Version : Should I go WC'ing?

I'm seriously thinking about going water cooling. Is it really worth it? I would only need to cool my CPU as I find it's the only part that's held back by temps. Even my volt-modded card does fine with air-cooling and chipsets don't produce loads of heat. I'll say this before I start though, I know next to nothing about WC'ing, ask me anything you want about air cooling, but I'm not up to date on other cooling methods. So anyway, what I want to know is, how much is it going to cost me to put together some parts that will cool my CPU and be worth it over air cooling. I'm just trying to get an idea of what I can expect here and what the real gains in temp will be.
Of course, I could just go crazy and buy a phase change kit.

first lemme ask you a question efore I can answer your question, what cpu are you trying to cool and what is current temps, clocks, and volts on it?

E8400.
I've had some really bad luck ATM so I can't tell you any of my temps. First, while I had my Q6600, I had a BIOS flash go wrong, nothing worked, had to RMA the board, so I bought the MSI in my sig after I'd sold my Q6600. Anyway, the MSI arrived, wouldn't POST. I thought, that's OK, I'll just drop in my old D 805 and flash the BIOS, well guess what? Yep, the D was an exception on the supported list. So I'm just waiting for my P5K to return now.
I have a 745A batch E8400, so I'm hoping for 4GHz with ~1.3V.
The E8400 shouldnt be putting out more than the vendetta can handle, the 45nm chips run pretty cool. What I suggest doing is running it as high as you can and check the temps then.
yeah, e8400 is fine with air 4+ is easy on air.

Who said I was going to settle for 4? I want to get the maximum I can possibly achieve, and the 45nm have a much higher heat density than the 65s so they still put out quite a bit of heat at high frequencies. I have a 745A and an 806A so hopefully I'll have one that can do 4GHz with <1.3v, if so, you knows where 1.4V will take me and if air cooling is going to be enough. I'll post back when I get my E2140 so I can flash the BIOS and finally get the E8400 up and running, I'm going to wet lap it too once I know which is the better of the two.

Hey, this is OC forums. Don't we all want the max no matter what it takes?

If you haven't already, start with this:
WC basics (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=356038)
Is WC worth it? For me, yeah. For you, it depends on you and what you want. Chop through this sticky and ride google a bit. When you have questions there will be lots of people willing to offer answers based on a myriad of perspectives.

For temps? Yes water cooling is very effective. Maybe 15 - 20 degrees cooler than decent air cooling.
For overclocking? Not really. Although you'll get better clocks at lower temps, it's not worth the money your gonna spend.
For me? I enjoy doing stuff to my computer and it was fun to water cool. Now that it is set up, I enjoy low temps. I have the E8400 and it is held back by voltage more so than high temps. Of course, I have water cooling.
4Ghz is kind of pointless in terms of gaming perfomance. If you want a horse, you should get a quad core. If you are a sensible person, don't water cool. If you are an overclocking, water cooling, Ghz addict . . . Go for it! And know that you have company.
