Hey everyone, I'm looking for a way to increase my SETI production. Can anyone tell me of an inexpensive solution to running multiple PCs off of one monitor over a network?

Thx in advance.

Just for seti? There is a program out there called VNC that will control a computer through a network. If it is just for seti@home though, I run several computers through a make shift seti server with a dedicated T-3 line. All the work units are stored and sent off the server, but the other computers run the program through the network. Hope this helps...if you are unclear on anything let me know.

VNC (www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/ ).

Will allow you to control as many clients as you need via remote control from one station. Several members here are using it.

Could also think about investing in a KVM switch. I have a 4-port I got of eBay for about $30-40 after shipping that allows you to use one keyboard, monitor and mouse for up to 4 PCs...you just twist a switch to the PC you want to use.

VNC would be, of course, the best cost-effective solution though.

VNC should work well for you.

I use both VCN as well as a KVM switch.

Good Luck!

VNC in conjunction with a little proggy called vnc connect. It works with VNC and acts more like a kvm switch. Rather than start vnc and enter the password for each box, you just hit an up and down button to scroll through a list of systems you have VNC running on.

Would you happen to have a link handy Tim?

just how hard to set up VNC??

or KVM switch would be a better solution??

how 'bout storing all rigs' SETI data in a server, and all clients run from it?? how to do it?? just have multiple copies of SETI in the server, then run a single one for each client?? need some more detail.... (sorry, not to familiar w/ it)

tks...

VCN is easy to set up,

A KVM switch is easy as well but will cost somewhere between $50 to $100 or so plus the cables, whereas the VCN program is free.

Try the VCN, then upgrade as necessary.

Good Luck!

What I do is take my server, which is a Pentium 120MHz 32MB of RAM, so nothing high powered, and Setup folders for each computer. I have them named like Seti1, Seti2, and so on and so forth. In the folders I put seti spy, seti driver, and the CLC of coarse. After all the folders include all the data, go to the computer that you want to run seti on and find the folder on the server. Set it up, and move on to the next one. Keep repeating this process till your done. If you want to monitor the machines to see their progress, just go to each folder and double click on seti spy on your main rig. It will report the info there. Make sure you have a dedicated line on your server, so seti driver can auto transmit your results.
