Bah, they just want some hits to their website. I mean the game is not even out yet, how could they have possibly of played it yet? Oh wait, let me guess. The press magically gets their copies early.

Did MGS4 even go gold yet? Most of the time early reviews are based on preview codes and not the final build - such as the recent Ninja Gaiden 2 reviews.
I'd really prefer that all reviews should be based on the product that we will ultimately see in the stores. The score for MGS4 is great [surprise, surprise!] but I think its a matter of principle.

In return for letting us play Metal Gear Solid 4 before its release, Konami issued us with a list of things that we're not allowed to discuss.
first sentence from the review.
and the game went gold a little over 2 weeks ago, around may 12th.
Heck yeah. Yes, the game has gone gold. And yes, press often get the game early, so they can review it before the game comes out to (usually) inscrease sales. I see that as a good thing. I like reviews to come before the product officially releases, so I can figure out if I want to get it or not.

Ever since the gamespot fiasco I am not buying what any review site is selling. We suspected that the scores were bought before, now we KNOW they are. GTA4 was WAAAAAAAAAAY overrated. I usually agree with the metacritic user scores. I'll wait to see those.

I'm pretty sure the game is out, I saw it in the newegg newsletter today.
Agree on GTA4 being overrated, it's a solid game, but I saw it get 10's in Gameinformer and just had to chuckle. It's an 8 or so IMHO.
edit: Oh, I just went to click the link to order and it's a pre-order. Blah.
Pre-release reviews are frequently among the worst for accurate/objective information. Even without any under the table deals going on, there's at the very least a definite conflict of interest. Reviewers are dependent on the developer/publisher for their early copy, from which having that pre-release article sells magazines / gets website hits...which sells ad space. Developers/publishers cherry pick reviewers that they believe will give glowing reviews of their product. So, it's heavily in the reviewer's favor to give those glowing reviews so that they can get those early peeks and continue to get them in the future. Who knows what other specific agreements might be made about what to say or not say in the article.
I'm not saying the game isn't going to be good, but pre-release reviews aren't trustworthy sources. They're usually more like an extensive commercial with a suggestion of objectivity.

Here here! I think I was probably THE 1st person on this site to say GTAIV was overrated. (Once again this was followed by 20 people saying I was crazy.)
I don't even GO to Gamespot anymore. Did you hear their BS reason for not reviewin Ninja Gaiden II?
"Because Microsoft told us not to..."

I agree. Most reviews are now under heavy suspicion. Is any game really a 10? In my opinion a 10 means the game is ground breaking in some way and flawless in it's delivery. Not many of those games. I would give GTA4 an 8.5
Konami has their paws all over the MGS4 reviews. I'll wait until people buy it, play it, and post reviews on it.

2 more days, I preordered the gunmetal version, countdown in akihabara, man this is going to be fun, a pity it means the end of metalgears.

Ha, had my PS3 from launch and I think it may have finally kicked the bucket. Of course it happens right before MGS launches, oh well I suppose.

Let me guess... BluRay drive died?

What a silly thought.
Metal Gear deserves all it's high scores.
How do I know this before playing it?
Kojima made it.

No it isn't! Possibly the end of Kojima heading them, but definately not the end of the MG series.

No. Actually I let my friend borrow it for like 2 weeks and I just got it back about 3 days ago. The unit starts up but I cannot get an image on my TV. My TV is HD but I tried moving the PS3 to a non-HD TV when I got it back and using the reset trick to get it to revert to RGA cables, well it seems to refuse to revert and now I cannot get the HDMI to work. So not sure if friend broke it, or if it was just its time.

When did I say it deserves the scores ?
Couldn't care less about scores after the gamespot issue. I really like metal gear, just like I bought the biggest HL2 pack and will buy from HL3 as well.
By the way swapping my 60G PS3 for a new more silent one with 1 year warranty, dualshock 3, and a little cash isn't such a bad thing either.

Does Kojima direct Power Rangers by any chance? The action in the Cutscenes is remarkably similar sometimes - full of pointless over-emotional running around and dialogue. Same goes for the "villains" in the game, I cannot believe that it tries to take itself seriously.

so you tried holding the power button in until you heard 3 beeps and it reset and still got nothing with both the RCA cables or the HDMI?

Not a fan of charm I take it. It's what the series is all about. It has character, unlike the hundreds of other games out there.

It's not charm it's ridiculous, it's full of too many inconsistencies to be charming.

I take it you aren't a fan of Godzilla :p
MGS2 did have some serious 'WTF?!?!?!' moments. Enough so that I didn't bother with 3..

Actually I really wanted to like MGS, I did enjoy the PSX version, but after that it went down hill, with all the "She is Lady Luck!" stuff etc.
I can no longer take any of this gibberish seriousleh.

The amount of videos talking is not surprising if we consider Kojima aimed to be a movie director during university.
Probably that's why I like his games, especially this one, HL was until now the ultimate film like adventure for me. With all the things Gordon had to make from trivial to quite difficult it felt realistic was like if I were there despite the outdated graphics and all, they did it again a second time hats off for that and the episodes as well.
Konami cancelled all MGS4 activities here due to killing in Akiba last weekend, quite understandable. Luckily where I preordered it they accepted this as a good excuse to start selling the stuff 2 hours earlier.
Then 3 of us came to my place, as we live 15 minutes from akiba and played all night.
So far the game holds it against my highest expectations, it looks really good sometimes i have been just wondering around looking at stuff, and the gameplay is great.
It might trounce HL/HL2 on my best game list in this genre, so far it is wonderful but have to see the whole picture of it.
I am really satisfied with it.

Oi, i just finished act 3 in the game...and wow.
this game is GREAT so far.
yes, there are A LOT of cut scenes, but the story is good enough, that you forget how long they are.
the ending to act 3 is simply amazing!. Kojima's people REALLY did a DAMN good job at the cut scenes.
and the beginning of act 4...i won't ruin anything, but it will be VERY familiar for those who have played the older MGS games. :D

Oh come on magazines and their points are a joke, shouldn't be taken seriously.
Like edge giving 8 for MGS4 and 9 for Bangai-O Spirits.
I'm enjoying it quite a bit. I sat and played solid when it came out pretty much start to finish over a weekend with a bunch of ppl watching me and totally engrossed in the storyline. This is first MG since then that has come close to that playing experience. I could only get about a qaurter into 2 and lost interrest, and 3 never peaked my interrest at all.
Only real complaint so far is nothing has been very challenging so far. No boss fights at all yet. But I am sure I have plenty more to play.

Not really, all of the bosses were predictable and not that hard.
I still love the game despite it though, and Im already three fourths of my way through a second game.

Slow down there slugger
Completed it and have been playing through again on hardest difficulty, I'm trying to do it with no alerts and no kills. It's bloody hard can't buy any non lethal ammo so you have to hold up people and search them in hope you get a few bullets.

I beat it 2 times first time it took like 20 hours I checked everything, second time with no alerts but made 6 kills in act 2. Never mind, I play it again with stealth to get the bandana, then with that in hand once as Rambo to get the 100 alerts, and finally to get the BOSS medal.
