I'm trying to make just about the best system I can, and I know that does mean DDR3 memory, but I was wondering what kind of actual jump in performance I would see from DDR2 to DDR3.
I was thinking of going this route:
Intel 2 Extreme CPU
2x nVidia 9800GX2 GPU
4GB Corsair Dominator (2x 2GB Kit):

with this 490i Intel motherboard:

How much of a jump would that be over a DDR2 setup?

Benchmarks show little to no difference for current apps/games...
But if I could afford it I would go with DDR3 so I could carry it over to newer, DDR3 only mobos...
Too expensive for right now. Not worth it. But if money is not an object why not.
And if you do go with those DDR2 Dominators, get the 2 x 2 set. Easier to OC and less stressful for your NB. :)

DDR3 is only worth in if infact you know your board and cpu can do over 533fsb. while there is higher rated ddr2 at cas5. you would be able to get the same cas timing with ddr3 and push the ram farther. that is imo the only reason to go with ddr3, is in end a higher 1:1 with less voltage can be done. im my self will be going ddr3 with P45 in the not to distant future. i would be paying the same price for nice ddr3 2gig kit, like i did for 2gig of ddr2-800 kits. people complain about the price, only do so cause DDR2 is so cheap right now.

Do you think I can push 533fsb with the Intel Core 2 Extreme and the 790i board I'm looking at?

the 790i reference board is a monster and will have no problem running 533 FSB...the CPU however won't. 45nm Quads have trouble running 500FSB under liquid nitrogen or big cascades...on air, it just isn't going to happen.
