View Full Version : Team Fortress 2 rant.

Team Fortress really brings out the stupid in people.
Engineers are often the most stupid.
How stupid do you have to be to decide it's a good idea to be an engineer in an attack/defend map, where your team is attacking and there are only a couple minutes left.
And what about engineers putting their sentries in the places where a soldier can easily shoot it from out of the turret's range and destroy it? Its not hard to realize...

And then there str people who become a scout when you're suppose to defend. I mean really? How the hell are you going to help a team defend points as a scout?

Snipers are pretty bad too.
I don't know how selfish you have to be join a game and become a sniper despite the fact that there are already multiple snipers on the team.

This has happened so many times: I load the map, there are no snipers, so I decide to have some fun and be a sniper. 2 minutes later there are 3 snipers on a team of 7 people and I have to switch to a more useful class for the good of the team.

It's called Team Fortress for a reason, I wish clan servers would boot people for not playing as a team.

Play on servers that don't allow snipers or at least only a few per team.

You play on some pretty bad servers then.
I've met plenty of good defense Scouts, offense Engineers and frontline Snipers.

A good scout on defense can zip through the enemy lines, cause a lot of confusion, and delay the oncoming attack. Gives the defenders more time to get set up and organized if need be.

I do agree about the snipers though. Not only is it a pain when half your team is snipers, but it's annoying when half the other team is snipers, and you can't make it out of your spawn without getting your head blown off because there are 2 snipers covering each exit...

I totally agree, but more often than not the people doing those things are not helping the team either because they're just not very skilled or because its not a useful class for the map/cp stage.

I'm thinking we need another OCF TF2 night...

I tried attending those like 3 times...with only 1 time actually having a few people from OCF there and never the person that originally organized it.

If I join a team and there are already 3 snipers, they all change class after 10mins or so. You only really need 1 good sniper, it's a shame that there are so many horrible ones out there. Rest assured a good sniper is an asset to the team, no matter how many crap ones are already present.

Engies building on offense can be super effective if they never build their sentries past level 1. You drop a sentry, defend with the shotgun/pistol, and move up. There is a reason they give engies 200 pistol ammo and one of the most powerful shotties in the game.

As far as scouts go on defense, that class has one of the highest skill ceilings in the game. A great scout can do much more on defense than even a mediocre soldier.

Granted this is assuming that the people playing these classes in these circumstances are any good/know what they are doing. I have been annoyed by all of these things too at times.

As far as OCF TF2 night is concerned, I am now free on Thursday nights, so I can show yall what an offensive sniper is meant to be if ya like. :)

He speaks truth.. I played with beatbox one night, and he was just owning the people on my usual server. There were plenty of highly skilled regulars there too, he wasn't plinking newbies or anything. Of course, I was crocked and playing off classes so I probably seemed pretty crummy at it, but who cares? Long as it's fun, right??

I've been neglecting my TF2 duties, gonna have to play today. If anyone wants to try a decent server, check out Jedi's Loft #3 - 69.28.221.57:27015 is the addy. No idiots, please, they boot you real quick for swearing/mic spamming/griefing in general :)

To the OP, when people are being useless classes, it's often because they are new or don't know the maps well. I find that if you have people being stupid classes, you can ask nicely and 90% will switch or move up or whatever.. 10% say things like 'don't tell me how to play!' but those types usually leave the server soon anyway :p

A good scout on defense can zip through the enemy lines, cause a lot of confusion, and delay the oncoming attack. Gives the defenders more time to get set up and organized if need be.Maybe one out of five tries, and it's unlikely they're getting any kills. Scout is a great adrenaline rush but is near useless if you're on defense.

I think the engineer has to be the easiest class to rack up a frag count, since you hardly do any actual aiming. Demomen don't really require a lot of aim either, just spamming, even with the lowered ammo count the only two strategies I see them use are: spam 15ft^2 areas or camp doorways with pipe bombs.

As for classes I actually respect, there's medic, pyro, and spy...those strike me as the thinking mans way to play. I play as a soldier, which can be cheap with crits, but requires good aim for well placed rockets. Heavy is fun to play as but a little slow for my tastes.

Sure it's "team" fortress, but don't expect much cooperation on public servers. You pretty much need voice chat and a clan to really delve into the teamplay aspects of the game.

Maybe one out of five tries, and it's unlikely they're getting any kills. Scout is a great adrenaline rush but is near useless if you're on defense. You really haven't played with any good scouts then. Of course, it also heavily depends on map. For example, the last point of Dustbowl is a stay away for defensive scout, while the second point very nice (unless they have an offensive engy with a SG near the tunnel entrance) - the area from the gates up to the tunnels is very wide open yet still containing millions of places to dodge behind, with health packs stuffed left right and center. And a good defensive scout on Gravelpit...yeah, defensive scout heaven.

I think the engineer has to be the easiest class to rack up a frag count, since you hardly do any actual aiming.Disagree. If your team is any good, your SG will rarely see action - unless there's an uber, in which case your SG is just as useless as evreyone else (and the prime target, for that matter). That's not to say engies are not important - their SGs are exceptionlly important for the sole reason of long term area denial. Really, when have you seen an engy near the top of a team? I haven't seen that since TF2 first came out, when evreyone loved to run into the field of fire. Good times :D
Still a good noob class, though, just don't expect the kills.

In general, all the classes require their own important skillset.
And yeah, I also want a well attended TF2 night sometime...

Yes it depends on the skill but more often than not you don't get an excellent player using an unfaborable class for the situation. You're saying on defense you would rather have a scout rather than a demoman, a heavy or a medic? Come on.

Angel-of-Sorrow
06-01-08, 05:28 PM
Not rather, but I would prefer one to be included. The three classes you've mentioned are either too slow or normally incapable of actually fighting over a point without assistance. A good Scout can take people down while delaying the opponents from taking the point while your backup waddles there way to the frontlines.

The same could go for Spy too, he's obviously not going to be on the frontlines but he can still provide support by keeping Engineers busy and taking down important classes that could hinder your capture. Unfortunately, I've only met two people I would even consider a good Spy.

Every class is important whether it's on defense or attacking. Even if most people playing aren't actually good at what they are playing.

I've seen a few people from these forums in game (outside of Game Night). I usually go unrecognized because I use a different name. Only when I notice someone on my friends list that I recognize as being from OCF do I use this forum name in game. Recently I got called out by someone from these forums for sniping when we already had 2 snipers. I won't say who, but he was pretty annoyed over voice chat. If I remember correctly he understood why I play sniper a few rounds later.

I play as "T|A Richard Ramirez" and you all can add me to your friends list under "richardramirez" if you like. I am also one of the admins for the OCForums (http://steamcommunity.com/groups/ocf)Steam group so you can reach me that way. I probably won't be on until at least Tuesday so don't be discouraged if I don't accept right away.

I'm sorry to say this is a silly rant. While I can understand where you're coming from, I've seen defending and offending scouts totally kick ass. They can 1 shot pretty well with their scatter gun. Whether the player is good enough or not, thats the issue.

Snipers are unfortunate. I love sniping, but the calss is always full of 6 year old idiots who don't understand what a sniper is, and use to go on offence. That certainly brings out the stupid in people, but not all snipers arestupid. Some are fantastic, don't take it out on us when you got little jimmy snipping and getting his ass kicked, taking up a damn slot.

Not to mention that there are servers that work towards avoiding this. I would recomend clan servers, or making your own and customizing it.

Hah, wonder if it was me. I've whined at many a person who joined a game and used a class we already had too many of. OTOH, if I see Dark Lord or Hawk join as sniper, I'm not going to say anything even if we have 6 other ones. Ditto for Amycus as spy, Jenna Talia as engineer, MDK as demo or heavy, and various other people.. If it's someone who's proved they can play the class, they get a free pass even if the team has way too many.

edit: If it was me, feel free to call me out on it :) I can eat humble pie as well as the next guy

Heh, I don't think it was you ratbuddy. It could have been, I wasn't really bothered at all, I get it all the time on most every server. Oh wells. I'll just keep popping heads. :)

Kayson, I'm stuck on my laptop for the time being, and I don't have Steam installed (nor do I think I should, it's a work lappie). If you PM either ONI or rainman they can set something up. The sooner the better, and I WILL be there this Thursday. ;)

Yeah, I remember when you dropped by in one of my games a few weeks ago.

Kept the rest of their team down, you did. Lets me shoot at their heads from above with rockets more often :D

Christ. Add "not moving up" to the list of annoying things people do in TF2. Me and a medic did this little bit of carnage. Mind you, it's 15v15 teams. I killed 12 or so of the enemy in about 10 seconds. Love crit flamethrower. The enemy was defending the 3rd point on Warpath. My team managed to NOT take the point, rather they sat back and defended the tunnel leading to our 2nd point  Sorry about the blurs, there was a moron with a dirty name the admins hadn't banned yet.
