View Full Version : Question on Voltage (im a newbie)

Ive never really paid attention to voltage etc, but I just got a new Athlon XP 1800, and a Soyo Dragon plus. And this is what my hardware monitor is telling me

+5: 4.83v
+12: 12.22v
-12: -12.44v
-5: -5.55v (fluctuates between -5.50 and -5.64)

Now they all appear to fluctuate, minimally (about .10). But my concern is with the -5, because the monitor software lists it as in the red. Should I be worried, and is there anything I can do?
Thanks alot for any assistance, im pretty new to this level.

4.83 is cool, try dealing with 4.68...Heh heh.

Could be better, but you are ok.

I'd call it barely OK, and if it were my board, I'd break out the triple mosfet mod (http://forums.overclockers.ws/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=51160). It involves some soldering, so if that makes you nervous but you still want to do it, practice on an old stereo or something first.
Good luck!

Your 5v is a bit to low & 4.6, flounder43, thats dangerous!

-Do you have any lockups or weird crashes?
If so a CPU voltage boost may do the trick.

Flounder43, were's your mosfet mod, you could greatly
use one.

As for the 5- the only thing its initially used for is
the floppy drive. I will not worry too much about it.

It may be also a read difference, if you have a
voltmeter I would examine the red wire on
the 4 pin molex and the black wire closesed to it.

What I need, is a new power supply! I can't decide on one, and they just seem so expensive!

I'm not a big fan of that +5v line either , I'd be more concerned with that than the -5v line if I were you , it's pretty borderline.

Just get an Antec 400W. If I have to come over there and bend your arm, it won't be pleasant... :D

I'll pay $8 to see that! C'mon people, there's arm bending to be seen!!!

Ja! Antecs are sweet PSUs and not much $$$ either!

Thanks for the info, I really appreciate it. Is there somewhere that I can find out what the different lines are primarly for?
I had no idea -5 was just for the floppy. Hell, I dont even own any floppy disks. Anyhow, thanks again.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but drives use +12 and +5, +3.3 is for peripheral cards, the motherboard itself uses +5 also, and the - voltages are just to provide negative reference for regulation....right?

The 5+ & 12+ are for drives (red; Yellow wires).
The other 2 blacks in the molex are nutral or -.
The other components WILL use -12 volts, for motors.
Like I sayed the 5- really is only used by the floppy drives,
but sometimes will be used for other stuff.

Well, this can't be right. Check out my voltage settings!

-5 =2.96 <--- yeah it's in the red

3.3 = 3.31 ok here

+12 = 12.4 ok again

-12 = -0.48v <--- bad

Can anyone tell me what this truly means?

I feel those readings are incorrect!

The 5- like I stated is mostly for the floppy drive,
and the 12 mainly for motors.
If your 12- was at about .5V your Hard drive would fail,
so would all the fans and any other devices with motors.

If you have a multimeter or a voltmeter please check the volts.
place the + in the yellow wire of the molex and the - in the
black wire next to it in the molex.
Same for the 5v (the red wire and the black next to it).
If you have a meter please tell me what it is so I can analyse
it, if not, I'd say dont worry too much about it.
