Literally ironic. Ironic, when the actual outcome is the opposite of the intended outcome.
I took my heatsink off to lap it. When I put the fan back on the heatsink, I put the clip on backwards, and didn't notice. This allowed the step that clears the rear portion of the socket, where the hinge of the lever is, to hang on it. So it wasn't making full contact. It started just fine, but hung up running the RAID BIOS. Then the black screen, and the smell of death. I thought I was so careful, after all, I'm allready in serious debt. Happy new year!

ARRRRRGH, I am sorry that happened to you. I forgot to plug in my HS fan yesterday, and fortunately, I was listening to see how the fan sounds, and when I didn't hear it, I was able to pull the plug... It takes a while to heat up a heatsink, thank god.

Thanks for the sympathy. At least here, I can tell people what happened, and they can understand. When I bought that 1.33, he got me a deal on an OEM, said that the only downside was that the warranty wasn't as good. I wasn't concerned, I thought I'd replace it before that would ever be a concern. I hadn't planned on this, but I guess I was on the money not worrying about a warranty! Hopefully the price has dropped a bit on T-birds, since everyone wants XP's. And maybe if I'm really lucky, they'll have one in stock. At least I have my trusty spare here. And to think I've toyed with the idea of selling it.

The first time it wouldn't give me a screen with the settings it had previously run fine at, I pulled it off. I saw a nice even pattern on the heatsink, from the thermal grease. It's when I replaced it that it hung up on the rear of the socket. When it got a little weird, I wasn't concerned, because I knew I was getting full contact!
Just hope my board's ok. Probably, but I won't know until I get the next CPU. And I really thought I'd be getting rid of that PCI video card soon. Maybe after my tax refund.
