View Full Version : Help me shut up my hard drive
I have a Dell 5000e, PIII 600MHz, 128 MB Ram, and WinMe. Even when its just sitting there idle, every couple of seconds there is a very short burst of hard drive access. I have the "restore" feature turned off, and I did the three-finger salute and killed everything except explorer and systray. There are no scheduled tasks either. But still that BRRRR, BRRRR, ...
It's driving me nuts. None of my desktops do this, so I have to assume its got something to do with laptops. Any help would be appreciated.
EDIT: This is a laptop that I'm having problems with.

Replace the HD. I can't even hear mine. I have two 20 gig Maxtors and 1 30 gig WD. I can't even tell when they are being accessed...
Oops, my mistake. This is a laptop we're talking about.

That's even worse...that much noise from a little laptop HD? Sorry, I guess I missed that...
I think that you need more RAM, or a reinstall of your OS. I used to suffer with that random accessing, but no longer. When I first started with 95 and 98, I was perplexed by the almost random bouts of HD accessing... It is just possessed!

128MB of memory should be enough, besides, it does this when sitting idle too. My previous laptop used to do this too. I'm beginning to really hate laptops. One of these days I'll exorcise it by drop kicking it thru my window

If more ram or reinstalling your op system doesn't help, then try to find some software that fixes the constant access noise. My friend had this problem with his new segate IV, as it keeped on accessing the hard drive. He found software that fixed the problem.

pump up your ram, and disable virtual memory?
