Are cards getting close to using the extra bandwidth on this slot? I haven't seen anything on it recently, but I am putting together a new system in the next few weeks, and was wondering if it would be worth it to try to get a motherboard that had this. Last I heard, PCI-e 1.1 was more than enough, but with the GX280, 260, and the new ATI cards coming out, are we getting close to needing it?

No cards can yet fill it. I don't even think an 8x can be saturated.

We have no idea on the future cards as we are just now finding out what they look like, no benchmarks.

I think (not sure) that the benefits of PCIE2.0 are not just a bigger pipe (after all we would have just used PCIE32x slots then). But since it runs at twice the clock speed I assume the latencies are better as well.

I have not read anything to this effect but have not looked into it either. Just a maybe...
