I wrote up a guide this evening for tweak3d.net. It is a complete description for using wpcredit.exe and wpcrset.exe to lower cpu temps while in Windows by huge amounts. If any of you are interested, it will be posted tomorrow, but you can have a look at it here:

Via KT266A HALT Command Detect - WPCREDIT Tweak Guide (http://12.229.149.4/wpcredit/wpcredit.htm)

If all the pictures don't show, hit refresh a couple of times. I only have 128k upstream bandwidth, and I'm running IIS (yuck).

I hope the information helps all of you as much as it helped me. I'd appreciate it if you replied to let me know if it worked well for you and what you thought of the guide, itself.

Good luck and happy overclocking,
Mark

ok u lost me here

this guide is most likely irrelevant, since programs such as CPUIdle Pro, Waterfall, and Rain will most likely do the trick for you.

so do u want us to use WPCREDIT or those other programs?

hmm i just got rain and i went from 38c idle to 27c idle funny thing is it also lowered my case temp and now i have a temp of 27c cpu and 27c case never seen that before and its staying at this temp while im surfing.. should i trust these readings.. and will this have any prefromence hits like if i wanted to open q3 or unreal or rtcw will it take longer for those games to start up?? just seems odd a program can do so much

P.S it did not find my cpu but is still seems to be working..\

P.S.S as soon as i closed the program my temps started to go up..

just got out of a long rtcw game and my temps went back to the normal 42c on load but that makes sence i guess sence this only works when idle like when surfing and stuff. but it was kool to see the temp drop like that :D

looks a good guide!! I don't see a lot happening over at Tweak3d what happened??

Some motherboard manufacturers have chosen to not enable halt-on-idle at some revision point in their bios' in the interest of achieving better stability. I know at least IWILL and ABIT have. If it is not enabled in the bios, no halt-on-idle program like Waterfall, Rain, etc will help. The reason for the WPCREDIT hack is to re-enable halt-on-idle. There are arguments both ways on whether it impacts stability. I think we can all agree that it certainly has a drastic impact upon CPU temps at idle, but at idle, the CPU temp is the least critical. Where a lot of setups suffer is during high CPU load and that is where halt-on-idle has the least, if any impact. If your PSU is running on the edge of its capacity, or if your setup suffers from resistive drop on the +5V path, suddenly going from very low current draw (halt-on-idle) to very high can sometimes make your system lock up. I stress the term sometimes . Kind of like the difference between rolling along steadily in you car and suddenly flooring it, versus sitting still and suddenly flooring it. I was a big proponent of halt-on-idle because it made me feel good to see the CPU temperature plummet when I was not running a CPU intensive application. Since the halt-on-idle did not help me under intensive use, I have since, stopped using it. If you look at my sig, those temps are without halt-on-idle enabled. If I enable halt-on-idle the lower temperature drops to 23C, but the upper doesn't budge.

Idle? Wtf is idle? You mean you people don't SETI? Click the purple link in my sig. :)

Both AMD and Intel have incorporated this feature into their CPU's for a very good reason. I can follow what you're saying, Hoot, though I highly doubt you can really compare the process of internal combustion to this. They are two entirely different principles. As for whether or not it's worthwhile to somebody crunching, it absolutely is. 99% of the time you are actively using your CPU you are not using it at full capacity, therefore the tweak is actively cooling. Concerning programs such as CPUIdle Pro and others in the same category, they only enable Register 95's Halt on idle. They do nothing with any other registers. They also use up memory and cpu cycles to accomplish this. Last, in my experience, I encountered little to no cooling effect from these programs on Windows 2000/XP. Most people who have used these utilities seem to agree.

Thanks for the critique and look forward to other tweak guides in the near future.

lennytiger, as far as I know, they lost a few of their people. I'm trying my best to get a reviewer position, right now. I'm good friends with Tuan Huan, one of the Senior Editors.

first i want to say it works great, it droped my temps from 38 to 29. One thing i noticed while looking through everything in MBM is that my voltages went up, especialy the +5.0v which was at 4.97 is now at 5.05, anyone else notice this?

Can't see this as a bad thing, considering a system will crash often when your +5 drops below 4.9

one more thing on the tweak, it doesnt seem to help at full load, while i idle at 29 my full load is still at 46
