In a couple of weeks I will install a new watercooling system. Should i lap the CPU then? How much should I lap an what grid should I start at?

The amount that you need to sand down is such that 2000grit would suffice I feel. It did for me on my first PIII tualatin. Might as well take it easy on the chip and if it works right you may keep all the silver on the IHS! If not then intel may not allow your warranty with copper showing on the IHS!

I don't know if that's a great idea because it won't shave off awhole lot.

It'll be noticeable to Intel.

Do you plan to take off the IHS and lap or the core itself?

I plan to keep IHS and lap that, but I wont do if it doesn't make a diffrence.

The IHS itself is fairly flat it voids your waranty, if you plan to make a mistake you'll always be able to send it back to Intel and they'll definitely RMA it where when they see the IHS copper they'll just simply say no since you modded it.

So I don't get any lower temperatures by lapping the IHS?
But if I take it of and lap the core? Would that make any diffrence?

Yes I know that MS would'nt give me a new CPU if a take it of or lap it and I wont do it if it doesn't make any diffrence.

Like I said the IHS is fairly flat and it'll give you 0.5 difference at the max.

If taking the IHS off then that's a different story and that'll reduce your temperatures, but I don't know by how much but it'd definitely make a difference.

Some people have sucessfully removed the IHS and others have ruined their CPU by doing it. Be warned and be careful.
