For Xmas, I thought Xmas was on 25 December:p
The digital out puts out a digital signal (Usually SPDIF <Sony Philips Digital Interface>).
You can connect the Digital out to a amplifier or speakers which have a Digital Input (your 5.1 speakers might have a Digital input).
The advantage with a Digital signal is that they put out less noise and usually have a wider dynamic range.
The DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) on sound cards are usually not that good, but most of the time they're still better than the Analog signal.
Hope that helped
I have a digital coax going from my Digital out on my front panel going to my digital receiver and it sounds AWESOME. This is one way to take advantage of the 24-bit 96khz 100db SNR. My mp3's sound crisper and better than my CD's (They are all recorded at a high bitrate):D
