View Full Version : Is my PSU failing on me?

After getting a Prime95 stable overclock, the system randomly freezes or resets itself from time to time (I'm doing dual SMP clients on my quad, yay team 32!)
Is it the PSU, or maybe the mobo? It can't be the CPU (I think), because the temps never get above 80C.
The PSU is a StealthXstream 600W from OCZ and my mobo is a 680i.

Can we get your specs?

How long do you run Prime 95?
80 degrees C?? That'll certainly croak your system. That's too hot!!

No, it never gets over 80C, it's always around 70-75C (when folding).
Sytem specs:
Q6600 G0 Batch # L744B127 @ 3.4-3.6ghz stable (8 hours of Prime 95 small FFT)
eVGA 680i A1
Kingston DDR2 800
eVGA 8800GTX.
Could you also list what PSU you are running.

Random freezes and restarts with an otherwise stable system are very indicative of either an unstable PSU or crappy power coming out of the wall. If you have a UPS though, that probably means your PSU is on it's way out.

The Intel temperature threshhold on a Q6600 is 62.2 degrees C.

"Thermal Design Power: (Also referred to as Thermal Guideline) The maximum amount of heat which a thermal solution must be able to dissipate from the processor so that the processor will operate under normal operating conditions."
So there are two items you can do quite easily:
1. Cool your rig better.
2. As Echo suggested a possible failing power supply, take a look with a good light at your power supply's capacitors and see if the tops are leaking or bulging:

This is an OCZ an OCZ Powerstream 600w unit that failed.

RT.
That is not the temperature limit, you can take a Q6600 to like 85c, but thats not reccomended.

Prime gets hotter than folding, like 5 degress C more.
