View Full Version : How realistic is "realistic" ?

When people say "It's the most realistic game ever!!!", I always cringe. Especially when they're talking about FPS, and racing games. How many people have been behind the wheel of an F1 and can say the game feels realistic? The closest i've ever come to being in an F1 was a formula Ford when I was in racing school. FPS give me the same feeling. How many times have you actually fired a gun? a machine gun? a plasma rifle?!? shot an alien? Just a pet peeve of mine I geuss. We sit there with hand on keyboard, mouse in the other, "Oh man! The gun is so realistic!".
Just annoying everyone with my useless prattle, possibly due to lack of sleep.

Realistic as far as racing games go no.Video games will never duplicate rolling a car,LOL:D .Any-one who has done that will KNOW nothin will equal that. And if you want that kind of realism take the 600$ you spend on a Geforce 3,buy a beater, take it out in the bush,And kick the p*** out of it.Just hope you live; some how I have.(course i dont do these things anymore).
Or when playing your sims evry time you wreck have someone standing there, and beat you violently for about 45secs,(maybe a older brother,LOL)
yea, I agree. About the closest games will ever come to realistic is having acuratly modeled weapons and cars and whatnot.

i agree with iffy, Max Payne is about as close to realistic as youre gonna get......and they cant make it really realistic otherwise it would be impossible, i mean seriously i man cannot kill 5000 men and heal himself completely with pain killers....but the game is real enough to get you involved in it......but i think things are progressing steadily towards realism......look at it
Doom, QuakeII, Half-Life, SOF, Max Payne......
actually sratch that the most realistic game ive played is Madden 2002.....the people look so shweet and the gameplay is pretty realistic....

Hmmm... you seem to be missing the point. How realistic is it when a guy can paste the enemy while diving from cover, in a slow motion mode.
I believe the point here is that realism can never truly be associated with videogaming. We can never really judge the "realism" of a game.
And thank goodness to that. I game to get away from real life, not to encounter another world just like mine. ;)

i think when they talk about realism they are talking in terms of graphics and enemy AI. sure they can use other things to enhance gameplay but they usually turn out to be gimmicks.

Well when games have graphics like the final fantasy movie.... :D
Strange, you just described FF X. :D
OK, not quite, but leaps and bounds closer than most other games. In many ways, truly beautiful.

Gran Turismo 3 A spec, is realistic because of the physics of the game and how to car reacts and how you can adjust sooo many aspects of the cars and how they handle, plus they are all real cars, but thats just my opinion.

It just bothers me that people use the term "realistic' too loosely. Everything comming out multi-player FPS wise is based on short rounds where, it's still based on killing the bad guy. CS is a prime example. It's RARE that some one actually completes the mission objective nowadays. "Realistically", you'll never see the US Navy SEALs hopping around like the easter bunny. But in CS we do it all the time because we know it's just a game, and we're taking advantage of the programming (for anyone that doesn't play CS, it basically means you're harder to hit, and if you are hit, it'll most likely you'll take less damage). Maybe I'm still waiting for a game that people don't mind sitting and waiting for a bit before the game moves on to the next round. RTCW multi play looked like it was headed in the right direction until I noticed you could spawn an infinate number of times. I'm not talking about the graphics, I'm talking about the gameplay. If you knew that you had one life for X number of minutes, and that you couldn't just respawn inside of 30 secs, but had to wait till the whole thing played out. Would you be interested in the game still? If CS rounds were 20 mins long, instead of whole maps being 20 mins long would you still be interested in the game? May be I'm from a different school of thought, who knows. It's 2:50 AM and I'm babbeling again, some one remind me not to drink so much coffee...
Rogue Spear and Ghost Recon are IMO closest to the most realistic games..

It's never realistic.
That is why we play computer games not computer realities.

Bah! that doesnt look any better than payne! :p
GR is sooo realistic, but i played it 4 like 4 hours and lost intrest... takes to much damn time to walk back to where you were killed.
Not alot of reality involved in being able to heal yourself or simply start off fresh at the touch of a button. You can't play at war and talk about realism unless you stuff a cattle prod beneath your tail and are prepared to take a jolt every time the other side lands one....IMHO :D  :D  :D

If you want to get realisim into a game such as counter strike, then things such as getting shot should kill you immedeatly and not take off around 30 -60 health, or the guns not shooting exactly in the middle of the cross-hair, or your arms not holding the gun steady all the time. Things like that make a game much more realistic. But then changing all that to a game such as CS makes the game less fun. Thats why many games are so non life-like. They are made for the user to have fun and enjoy the game. But still, games can never be life-like as they can't create the atmosphere or feeling of being in that real life situation. They can come close to it, but never exactly it.

Or if you do get shot in the leg, you start limping, can't jump, and leave a blood trail. Getting shot in the arm would mean you couldn't shoot anything bigger than a handgun. Finally, being at one health would mean dragging yourself across the level with a finger, leaving a blood smear as a small counter tracks blood loss. :D But, hey, we want the game to be realistic, don't we?

Deus Ex kinda caught onto that. But not 100%
No game will ever be "realistic" until we have brain connections like in the Matrix or Ghost in the Shell. And personally, wouldn't want that. Some script kiddie decides to hack my ghost, and suddenly I'm a drooling idiot for the rest of my life.
Games may be visually realistic, but gameplay will never be realistic. You'll never feel the kick of a gun as you fire it. You'll never feel the blood of your enemies splash on you, reminding you with a grim finality that you have killed someone. There will never be real consequences for our actions in video games. So games will never be realistic. And I for one am very thankful of that fact. What is the point of reality if it can be recreated on a computer?

Never say never. Technology has suprised us SO MUCH that i think that its only a matter of time.We might not feel blood splash on our face but thats different actually playing in a game than playing a "realistic" game.

When I think of realism, I think of every aspect, especially in FPS. In almost every FPS I play, the character can carry up to 14 weapons, ranging from meele and small arms to heavy platform weapons, along with the crates of ammo, that all seem to fit into your backpack or belt and your character moves along like they are carrying nothing. The closest in realism in that field is HALO. Anyone who plays the game knows your limited to two weapons and not much ammo with only a few grenades. Every weapon you pick affects your movement as well. In other FPS (Who will remain unnamed) allow you to run around while carrying a rocket launcher, while Halo and Deus Ex actually slow you down.
AI can never be realistic, but it can come damn close. Again, my pick in that field is HALO. A great example is in the begining, when you throw a grenade at the Covenant, they will group around it and stare at it until it blows up. It doesn't matter where you are in the game, the first few times you throw a grenade, they will do that. Then they start learning, when you throw grenade, they will now catch it and come sprinting right at you, hoping to take you out in the blast. The AI in HALO learns, Covenant and Flood start grouping together when fighting you later on, instead of fleeing in different directions.
As for racing, Project Gotham Racing is pretty damn realistic when it comes to car dynamics. Each car in the game seemingly mirrors it's real world counterpart in the way it handles and accelerates.

I dont' want games that realistic. I play games to escape from reality for a bit.
