I'm hoping this was a recurring issue for those who've experienced problems utilizing USB on overclocked boards.

I have a MSI BXMaster, with a 700MHZ overclocked to 1.01GHz, with a 144Mhz FSB. For a year I didnt have any problems until I started getting more USB devices and had to get a USB Hub. The problem was when the Hub was plugged in, the PC would hang on bootup during POST. If I pull the hub out it suddenly starts chugging along as if nothing happened. The weird thing is if I replug the hub while it's in Windows (Windows XP) it works just fine. I tried a different brand Hub with the same result. If I bring the PC back to its default speeds (700mhz at 100Mhz FSB) It boots up just fine.

I finally abandoned the Hub and got a USB PCI card (4 ports with quadrabus) The problem this time it takes a few minutes longer to boot up, and not USb devices connected are seen in Windows. If it bring the FSB down a notch to 133Mhz, it boots up fine and the USB addon card works without any problems. So apparently the USB addon card doesnt like being overclocked too. With aq 144mhz spped I had an out of spec 36 mhz PCI bus speed, but I never experienced any problems till now.

I had no idea USB was this quirky at overclocked speeds. Is this a mobo issue, in which case I should forget the 144mhz FSB and stay at 133, or could a better brand USb card handle a higher bus speed?

Thanks for any help and suggestions. :D

I think you allready have the answer. I've read that USB rarely tolerates over 34 mhz. But there might be a fix at USB man, www.usbman.com. Many tips, links, and answers. Good luck!

It depends on your board, some of the onboard usb controllers just don't like high fsb. A pci controller might work, but I'm not sure.

you could try a hammer? just a thought...

Seems to defeat the whole purpose of overclocking if the USB limits you to 133Mhz bus speed.

It occurred to me that maybe a solution would be to get a USB 2.0 compliant card as opposed to the standard USB 1.1 card I have now. From this board that has been one or two reports where speeds as high as 155mhz FSB could be reached without issues using a USB 2.0 card. I wonder why?
