View Full Version : [SOLVED] p3 to a celeron

ok guys, I am building another computer for my son, I currently have a p3 1000 in my system. If I bought a cerleron 1.0, 1.1 1.2 1.3 would it be better at 3d games? I m am a mild overclocker, mostly with the video, but may try more with the cpu in the future. So should I keep the p3 or give it to him and put a cel in my system with a st6?
Thanks
A Pentium3 will always be faster than a Celeron of equal core speed. Unless you overclock it, the Celeron can't compete with a P3 in anything, especially 3D apps (games). Of course, you must have a fast enough vid card to take advantage of it- A P3 running integrated video will be as fast (or as slow) as a Celeron in the same system when it comes to 3D.
The 1.2 and 1.4 Celerons are the special 'Tualitin' version- they require a special motherboard with low voltage to run. Check to be sure your ST6 can handle it before you buy one.

Yeah what Monster of Rock said is right.
Also, what P3 do you have? is it a 1000E or EB? and how far isit oc'ed?

Tualatin Celeron on 0.13micron process is comparable in perfromance to Pentium 3 "E" or "EB" type. The Tualatin Celeron is available in speeds of 1200 and 1300MHz with a 1400MHz part to arrive soon (A Celeron 1200 should therefore outperform the P3-1000EB quite easily)
Your mainboard, the ST6 is based on the revised 815EP chipset which does support the Tualatin core - so the motherboard is not a problem.

actually there are Celeron 1.0A, 1.1A, 1.2, and 1.3 cpus that are just as fast as PIIIS clock/clock.......these are tualatins and will be much better than the cpu you have because of overclocking ability....expect 1.4-1.6 with a cpu cooler uinder 20$...

Do you know where they have the slower Tualatin Celerons on Sale? I'm wanting one for some high FSB activity on my Pro266T board.

the new tualatin celerons are basically revamped p3's with lower core voltage and smaller die (.13 micron).
they have the same cache (256k) and the same interleaving (8-way as opposed to the old celerys 4-way)
and from what people say, they can overclock quite well.

There are other core enhancements too which are an improvement over the technology of the 0.18 process
yah, I forgot about the whole 'E' versus 'EB' thing.
Let me rephrase: a P3 at 133mhz FSB (an 'EB' chip) will be faster than any Celeron, Tualitin included- thanks to the FSB differential. A P3 at 100mhz FSB (an 'E' chip) will more or less tie a Tualitin-Celeron, but beat any Coppermine-Celeron. All bets are of course off when you start to overclock.
Thank you, Intel, for making this so #!$@#% confusing. :D
Note: It's spelled 'Tualatin', isn't it? Damn. Please pretend that's what I've been typing all along;)

I have the "eb" chip, and the best I can do with it right now is 1050 with a fsb of 140, due in part to my buying a tusl2-c board.
I am building a new computer for my son, and am thinging of a celeron for it, would I just be better off switching out this tusl2-c board for the st6. Would my overclocking be a little better? I dont care about the sons comp. I will just run that at default speed on the asus board if I switch.

ytes, ths St6 would be better for a 1.2 celly but not for a 1.0A Celly because under 133mhz (specifically from 123-132mhz) the TUSL2-C has problems with pci dividers (i think i may have scrambled dad's hardrive shhhh;) but with a 1.0A the TUSL2 should be fine...

Would the st6 be a good choice for my p3 1000 that I have now?

the ST6 is good for most S370 cpus, but once you go after 133fsb, there isnt much difference between the TUSL2 and the ST6...
The ST6 would be great as I hear its like "bug-free" and the 1/4 dividers start at 124 fsb like Abit always started it..
I'm sure you'll hit 1333+ with either the TUSCL2 or the ST6 either way but I recommend the ST6 since I'm an Abit guy.

dO YOU THINK i WOULD HIT THAT WITH THE CELERON OR THE P3? ALL I CAN MANAGE NOW IS 1050 WITH THIS P3 UNLESS I AM OVERLOOKING SOMTHING. ALSO, WOULD A CELERON @ 1333 OUTPERFORM MY P3?
THANKS

the new Celeron Tualatins with 256 cache at 133bus whould whip the pants off your PIII......also i would expect at least 1.5 from these chips....and yes that was with the Celeron....
I don't know if it'd be that wise to upgrade from 1gig P3 to a 1.2 Tualatin @ 1.5 or something.
Since the P3 1000E is pretty modern ..

Well if he gets the ST6 maybe he can oc to 1333 and you can say oc the Tualatin to 1.45-1.5... Shouldn't be too noticeable.. :D

i did the math and getting to 133 would comprise of acheiving a 177mhz bus...i dont think so.....remember he has an EB 133mhz FSB...the hihest i think hell get is 1100...

well, I will be getting a st6 and a celeron anyway, I just wasnt sure if it would be much of an improvement over what i already have. I guess I will put his machine together and benchmark, and test it with mine.
He has an EB?
Bah.
Maybe if you sell that P3 for about 100 dollars than fair deal to go with the Celeron :D

I am going to keep my p3 1000 on my tusl2-c board. I am also going to buy a st6 and a celeron 1.2. I am not a huge overclocker, but I will play with it. My only question was, which will perform better? I dont evan mind switching my p3 1000 to the st6 board and using the tusl2-c for the celeron in my kids room. I just want the best combination.
I have an antec 830 case with plenty of fans, and a ti-500.
Thanks for all you're replys guys you are great!
I am new here, and am really enjoying this site ( my new home page) and look foward to visiting.

The P3 1000E is archaic in comparisson to even Athlon Thunderbird in terms of technology which it was surpassed by on June 5th 2000 when the Thunderbird 1GHz was released
exactly, the T-Bird runs in extra-low temperature and have perfect protection mechanism against over-heat

Well I cannot comment on P3 1G vs. Tualeron 1.2G
but frankly speaking, even this is an Intel's area, if I'm going to buy a new MB and a new CPU I'll consider Northwood, Praestorian, Morgan or Palomino, depending on the usage and budget. The memory selection will depend on wheher I need to use any RAM on hand.
I would say Tualatins are for those who already owned an MB for Tualatin and do not want to buy a new MB. CuMine are for those who similarly had MB supporting CuMine, depending on your budget.
The other alternatives are dual MP/XP and dual PIII/Celeron2, dual Tualatins, depending on your usage and budget again.

I know - we got two green unlocked XP1800+'s here in the ASUS MPX board as the server. I think a lot of the new XP2000+ (majority in other words) are green rather than natural

that I am waiting for ECS to release a similar one 6 months later at 1/3 of Asus's selling price, and w/o a buggy USB
