View Full Version : does an ice coat on the evaporator slow heat exchange?

i went from a metal bin to a plastic bin yet still the temps stayed the same. Could the ice build up on the evaporator be reducing the heat exchange? Would rad fluid then make my system cooler?

temps as of now:

37C Load
23C idle

would rad fluid increase the cold capacity of the water before freezing? Becuase i imagin that the ice build up is just a wast of cold water.

ok X that, the evaporator no longer has ice on it but it's still cold enough that you finger will stick to it (found that out the hard way). so my new question is why isn't the water freezing? The fridges condensers are barly warm and the compressor is only slightly warm, so the fridge is not maxed out. so why isn't it cooling any further? yes the thermal probe is in a warm spot and the fridge is cranked.

Hi m8

Im a bit confused about your system.

ive probably missed a thread that explains it all.

Are you using a vapochill ?
Or a waterchiller system with your modded SK6 ?

Or something even better than those two ?

Or a refridgerator?
What is it?

Yes ice does disturb the cooling performance. Water has a unique charactaristic. When cooled into the freezing zone water specific gravity does crazy things. Water has its highest density at 4C i.e. a Specific Gravity (S.G.) of 1g/ml. So what happens is the water at 4C sinks to the bottom and the lighter cooler water freezes on the top. You need to get antifreeze in. Give us some temps. Also see the article on this on the front page and the link and go check the ability of your unit with the link at the bottom.

Ice is a pretty good insulator, so yes it will interfere with heat transfer.
