Time to step it up. Nvidia just released there 280/260 cards, and the results were a little lacking. The 9800GX2 looks like a MUCH better option atm, even the 3870X2 looked decent compared to the 280.
One can only hope the 48xx lineup competes, and we already know it'll be way cheaper!

Well, current rumor is that the 4870 will be about 30% faster than 8800GTS/9800GTX, which seems to be about where the GTX 280 is. I don't think I need to spell out what that means for Nvidia. All we can do though is hope that those rumors are true. :) If ATI can pull off even 5% less performance than the 280 at HALF the price... wow. :D I can't wait to see.

yep, it sounds exciting. and if its true about the whole nehalem thing and nvidia, we'll be seeing a lot of 4870 CF setups methinks

I can't wait to see the 4870X2! It should blow away the GTX 280. I don't know whether to jump on with the 4870 or wait until the 4870X2. Never had a dual-GPU setup before, maybe now is the time. :)

Same spot here never had a dual GPU and was never really intrested in them but now... Having a dual GPU setup sounds worthy giving that added perfromance without crushing the wallet, and probably last a little longer in my PC. Question is get the X2 or get dual cards. Hmmmm

Get the 4870 now, and get a 4870X2 later! 3 GPU's FTW!
All this 48xx talk has got my wallet itchy. I'm wondering if I should sell my 8800GTX now before it's value falls through the floor. I don't follow graphics cards close enough to make a proper judgment though, are we expecting a significant difference between my 8800GTX and say a 4870x2? Also, what's the launch ETA for the 4870x2?

i dont think its been decided just some time in july if i recall correctly
Geez, that's pretty soon. Is there a rough price point?
Also want to repeat this in case anyone can answer: I don't follow graphics cards close enough to make a proper judgment though, are we expecting a significant difference between my 8800GTX and say a 4870x2?

Isn't it on par with the GX2?

I'm guessing the 4870X2 would smash the 8800GTX into little pieces, but I'm not sure. The 4850s are absolutely incredible, the 4870s will be even better than them, and the 4870X2 will be roughly twice as good as a 4870. So that's pretty dang good. The 8800GTX is a great card, but looks like its usefulness is about to come to an end.

Yes, very significant. Sell now to flip as many bones as you can.
Thanks for the advice, I'll be in the classifieds! :D

I'm not sure what the purpose of this thread is, given there are already threads about how the 4800s and Nvidia's offerings compete. But like you guys I am itchy to obtain one myself, so I'll oblige. :)
Next month is a good time for building a new computer. The P45 chipset just came out. Also, I think I read that Intel CPUs are getting a price drop.
I really like the theme of this next-gen tech and die shrinks abound; it's very power conservative! No longer is there any reason to buy any PSU over, say, 700W. As an electrical engineer, I approve. ;)

this is the "post benchmark" thread. Personally, I saw the GTX280, looked at its results, and smiled. Because I know I won't be dropping $650 on that crap. 4870X2 is my next video card

The 4870X2 will come out in August - the 4870 is June 25 intro, with availability expected 8 Jul (depending on who you believe). But the X2 is definately an August part.

well if 2 4850's in CF can beat a single GTX280, then NV is in trouble. 2 4850's is cheaper then a single GTX280 by about $250.

If you don't mind to have multi-GPU configurations (I would have to see that micro-stuttering thing with my own eyes, because I don't have CF or SLI myself, nor I know about anyone by here that has it...), HD4800's seem the way to go... it seems that at least at 1920x1200 with 4xAA a single 4850 512MB GDDR3 is winning consistently against the 9800GTX and 8800 Ultra, and even in a few games, the GTX 260...
I don't know about US, but here at Spain 4850 seems to be priced at ~160€, when 8800GT is ~130-140€, 8800GTS ~190€, and 9800GTX ~240€...
