My girlfriends sister has a Scientific Atlanta HD DVR, and they were just complaining they can only fit 22 hours of HD shows on the thing, so they end up recording everything in SD since they watch so much TV

Is this type of thing a ripoff http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822161042 or any different from a normal external HD? I don't know the first thing about this stuff, like is it just formatted a certain way or ???

Thanks for any tips..

I can't think of a reason why any external eSATA drive/enclosure wouldn't work. Sounds to me like it's just targeted advertising, but I could be wrong.

I dunno about the SA units, but I do know that the Tivo units also have a eSATA connector for use with a external hard drive. They do have "Certified" units which are guarantee to work with the unit, but from what I read, most any external eSATA enclosure with its own power supply will work. There are limits though with the Tivo unit (I believe 500GB is the maximum size the hard drive can be), so you may want to do some Googling and dig up whatever info and post you can about your particular unit.

My dishTv DVR uses usb standalone drives over 500g. Most of the time it works great but if I try and send several shows at once, it will transfer the first 10 minutes or so then lose the rest!:bang head I've got WD 'My Book'r some such something and when it works you can't tell the difference in source.
Check a couple of TVtech forums and I'm sure you'll find some helpful reviews.
