ok, i disabled acpi while testing around with stability. The thing is I can't enable it again. What do I do? I thought all I would have to do is change the "standard pc" driver back to acpi. There is no option though.

ouch, um.. did you try the "rollback driver..." option? go into your device manager, and see if you can go into the properties under 'standard pc' and rollback the driver.
when i did this, and wanted acpi back, i just went to update the driver and both options were still there
good luck

First thing i did was driver rollback, nothing, and there's no other driver to update to. Weird, O well, ACPI, makes my computer BSOD, and run slow anyway. I quess I'll just have to trade in stand-by and auto shutdown for stability.

arghh... i don't get it. i have that same shut down problem with acpi disabled. everyone says "go to power options, and enable APM" to be able to auto shutdown. i don't have that tab/option there

That's because you have to go to add hardware wizard, and manually install APM. For some reason, it won't work on my system though.

I'm wondering why you would want to turn ACPI back on...Most people go nuts trying to turn it off for stability reasons.

Well, if I figure out how to turn it on and off, I could play around with trying to get stability with ACPI. It's stable now, but the waiting for the "safe to turn off you computer screen", and then holding the power button for 5 secs is annoying. I hope I find solution.
here is a link that may? help:

this came from it: will this work?
When Windows XP won’t powerdown automatically, the APM/NT Legacy Power Node may not be enabled. To enable this, right-click on the My Computer icon, click Properties | Hardware | Device Manager | View. Check the box labeled “Show Hidden Devices.” If it’s available on your computer, there will be a red X on the APM/NT Legacy Node. Try enabling it and see if this resolves the powerdown problem.

I know about that, just my computer is just as unstable with that installed as ACPI installed. It's weird, sometimes it'll start up, sometimes it won't when it's installed. Sometimes, it'll be in device manager OK, others it'll be in it with a red X, because it didn't start.

If you turn ACPI off you will have to manually turn your computer off. Is it that big of deal? If holding the power button in for 5 seconds is killing you I would be willing to be t that you can set the properties in your bios to have the machine power off as soon as you hit the power button instead of holding it in.
Word of advice....learn to live with holding the button in, because the first time you bump the power button while your knee deep in a game or project you will go nuts, Bo Jackson your keyboard, and throw your computer out the window. Trust me!

mine reinstalled by clicking update driver, show all devices and picked from the list.it still showed standard pc as well but with no driver.stability went straight to he!! and i found an article in microsot knowledge base explaining the correct way to do it.go there and do a search so you wont have to reformat like me.
just realized it was xp sorry i had 2000.its late so disregard this.
the link above was good reading and i realized eazy cd creator could have been part of ythe problem.after i reformated i downloaded the hp upgrade record now so i wouldnt have to diable roxio banner again.i wonderd why hp would upgrade a software program for freewhen they wont support the printer and scanner i have with drivers for 2000.
