i just put together a machine for my friend. it is a msi nforce board with a xp1600. and a taisol amd reccomended heatsink.

i am afraid to give it to him yet.
it is running at 47c. idle and 56c.+ prime95 or 3dmark. i know this is way too high for what we like around here. i would never let my machine get that hot. is this ok for a stock machine not o/c'd? or do these cpus normally run cooler than this? i used radio shack hs grease. and put everything together correctely. there is bassicly nothing in this machine. it hasnt locked up yet. if the taisol hs is this lousy and amd approves it they must think these temps are ok? it will not be o/c'd. i just dont want to give it to him if it will become unstable at these temps.
i am just asking this. because i am at less than 40c. under full load with air cooling on my own machine. i honestly dont know whats average for a "basic" machine.

thank you,
sendatooli.

How are your case temps?

That is cooking. For an XP, which runs cooler than a TBird, that is way too high. I checked out tomshardware for a review and two Taisol's are shown there. Although I don't like their performance, according to tom's results, your temps seem to be higher than they should be.

As flounder said, make sure your case temps are decent, since that affects your cpu temp directly, then make sure the Taisol is seated correctly. Sometimes HSFs don't sit completely flat, an end gets raised by the socket, which affects temps about the same as you're seeing.

Last, but not least, you can get much better HSFs for not a lot of money.

the case is boiling hot. so much for a $30 case(incl. 350psu)! also i scrubbed the hs with acetone and alchohol after i removed the thermal pad. but the outline of the thermal pad is still there. i dont know how much i can do here. i am working with lousy components. i guess as long as it is stable it is ok. this guy doesnt sit and watch motherboard monitor like we do here :).

i figured it was really high, thats why i asked. but i am not spending a penny on my friends machine(and neither is he)! i put it together for nothing. thats it. i even tied down all the cables and such. (he) gets what he paid for.

thanks for the replies, though.
