What the hell? Isn't this like the top of the line video card now? I thought ultra-high end video was aimed at the $400+ range usually? isn't that what the 5800/8800/ATI competitors were priced at 6 months ago?

I think top of the line cards are gonna be $350 by the end of the year, with mid-range HD4850 and 9800GTX sitting at the $150 mark. I think ATI and nVidia learned a lesson about charging $600 for a video card

FYI, the 8800ultra is still faster than this. Its not top of the line. And its not much different in architecture than the 8000 series either.

Dayum, I always harped on NV about the 9000 series stupid naming convention but this is such a huge price drop and the cards have only been out for a few months and the prices are dropping by half. NVs lineup is going to be totally screwy, I think they're going to have to drop the 8800GTS 512 (which was really just about the same as the 9800GTX) and then have the 9600GT ~$100 :o and the '9800GT' (renamed 8800GT) ~$150.

looking at some reviews at hardware canucks, the 9800gtx seems to pump out 15-20 fps more on most games than a 8800gt @ 1680x1050 , so its a good deal if you didn't upgrade to a 8800gt in the last few months...
but it does require 2 pci-e 6pin cables :/ that seems a like a lot of power needed...

I didn't say this card was, I consider it mid-range. The GTX280 and GTX260 are high-end ;) Both of which will be $350ish by the end of the year is nVidia is smart.

I don't know that they'll be able to push them that low, they are just damn expensive GPUs and boards. Usually high-end cards hold their prices until they go OOS entirely or are really EOL'd and surpassed by newer cards and it's just old stock selling off.
