I've done some forum searching, and some google searching, and I've tried both HP programs for setting up a bootable usb drive with no luck. I even tried to just search for bootable floppy images that I could put on the drive, but the ones I found wanted a floppy to write it to. Since BIOS flashing isn't an absolute necessity IMO, I'm not going to buy a floppy drive just to do it. But, I'd like to get my video card flashed, and maybe someday my motherboard.

Isn't there a fool-proof way to get these things bootable yet?

I have done it using the HP utility as well as Windows PE.

Download, unzip, and follow the directions.

I guess I had it working... I didn't realize it was treating it as a hard drive as far as boot priority. Just had to move it up the list :)

If you are using pe2usb this is very easily done. Follow the instructions below for drives over 2G and initiate "pe2usb %USB.Drive.Letter%" - this proc should NOT be followed if you are making a DOS bootable USB:

diskpart
select disk <%USB.Drive.Letter%>
clean
create partition primary
select partition 1
active
format fs=NTFS
assign
exit

Noob ?: With the HP util, where are the system files located that you have to specify?

This is where I got the ones I used. Just unzip them into a folder somewhere, and then point the HP util to the entire folder, as it will have another folder in addition to a bunch of files inside.
