My 9800 is running hot around 60c at idle... is that normal for the 9800? And at what temp do i have to start worrying about frying the card?

60c is fine. I bet the fan isn't running full speed anyway so get Rivetuner and check that. My 8800gts tops out at 60c under load with fan at 70%
GPU is a bit more forgiving of heat than CPU but not that much more. Maybe 80 tops to be safe?

Load temp is what's important; what are you getting as load temp?

60 is ok, my 88gtx works at 80c too, dam card.
i used to run 2x 6600gt in sli at one point, dureing the summer, and some great cod2 action, the cards were sitting at 100c, and it still played fine :)

Personally I don't like anything over 65c....

For a CPU, maybe, but a graphics card can take a lot more. About 110C is where you should start looking for possible problems with the cooler.

I'd freak if my Gpu temps went 60c loaded, much less idle. I get maybe 48-49c loaded.

No worries, I run cards up to 80+ all the time.

MY 8800GTX has been running at 87c load in AoC recently. Think I'm gonna replace the TMC on it. Havent in over a year :)

Ok i checked at full load is running at 70 C, weather is kind of cool over here atm so probably 80C in summer. Guess im safe for now :D
Once it starts to get hotter, just bump the fan up like 10% from what you had it. BTW, what is your current fan speed at for the 70c load temps?

Because it's bad for the cards or because it would mean your WC was dying?

Fan is at 45% at load.
I bumped it up with riva tuner to 65%, problem is it ALWAYS runs at 65% lol even when its idle and its sort of loud. Call me lazy but i hate going back to rivatuner to switch back once idle.

I had my 6800 gt at 125C and it wouldn't fry, it wouldn't start throttling the GPU until it hit 125C (then I would notice game performance is reduced a ton). So i can imagine the 9800 is the same if not better at dealing with heating issues.

I would keep it under 85oC.
85C is the recommended "max". I wouldnt worry unless you started to go over that.

Chips generally get more sensible to heat with decreasing manufacturing sizes, so I wouldn't count on that...
Still GPU's can handle very high temperatures without problems..
