View Full Version : New battery or APC ?
http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/7257/01150201040501161220080jh6.jpg
I have a very old APC Back-UPS 400. Its over 5 years old and has been through several batterys. None of the replacement batterys have lasted much longer than a year. Its been out of commission for probably 8 months because of a dead battery and I have all my stuff plugged into the wall and surge protected power strips.
Heres the stuff I need to have battery backup and what I rate the power usage.
computer w/500watt PSU- high
dual lcd monitors: low-medium
voip phone base: low
cable modem: medium
router: low
I don't really need the lcd monitors on battery backup, but I would like to have at least one on battery and both surge protected.
just as I'm typing this the power went out. I knew I would have to spend some cash when summer storms down here in florida arrive and their here!

Not quite sure what you're asking but I have an APC XS 800 and I love it.
After three years it still works, the other day the power went out and it lasted about a half hour before beeping so much that I just turned it off.
Not sure if that's normal or what, but it looks a lot better than yours too. :)
It's time for a new UPS, the batteries should last longer than that, mine are a couple years old and still working fine. If I were you I'd go with something 650va or more, I'm sure you'd like to keep your phone up for a while if the power is off, so the longer run time the better.
I just ordered this one: http://www.buy.com/prod/cyberpower-ups-intelligent-lcd-diagnostic-panel-1000va-600w-avr-9/q/loc/101/204694862.html

I picked up one nearly identical(minus the LCD) to that one for my folks last fall and it has served them very well so far. I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

good to hear. I was searching through UPSs on newegg and noticed cyber power, I figured it was some generic brand but I did some more research on them and also noticed their UPS's have the most reviews and stars of any on newegg, even APC.

The one I bought for my folks is powering thier computer, a 2.8GHz P4C, 22" LCD, router, wifi AP, fax machine and cordless phone and the power has not gone off long enough for it to shut down yet(hadn't gone off more than 10 mins).
I think I'm gonna have to use it with a power strip because the plugs are not spaced enough for the power blocks that my router, modem, and VOIP phone base have.

Get a few of these (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.geeks.com/imageshare/0/150x150/03114-DT-unit.gif&imgrefurl=http://www.compare-computer-hardware.com/buy.php/n%3D3%27%2BCables%2BTo%2BGo%2BSocket%2BSaver%2BMin i-Extension%2BCord/v%3DGeeks.com&h=150&w=150&sz=6&hl=en&start=24&sig2=7hLB2lnQSrN62gWQ_hj-bQ&um=1&tbnid=K0XBitkG7-rdIM:&tbnh=96&tbnw=96&ei=IqFhSOOtD5CgefK_8NAE&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dpower%2Bbrick%2Bextension%26start%3D2 1%26ndsp%3D21%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefo x-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26sa%3DN)
Thats what I use..even though my APC has 2 outlets far apart and designed for power bricks, they are still too close to use with my VOIP adapter, so I grabbed 2 of these and all fixed..
They show them as 3ft, mine are only 6 inches and they work great..I didn't see anymore of the shorter ones, but I know they are available somewhere..:)

I bought a 8 outlet power bar that has 3 sockets on one side spaced wide enough for bricks, and it was only like $10.
I have 2 power strips of my own I'm gonna use, they have phone line and reset switches, plus surge protection. I don't know if its ok to use two of them.

As long as you don't over load the UPS and plug each bar directly into the UPS I don't think there's any problem with that.
