Ok, struggling with this question. I’m not sure if my assumptions and conclusion are correct. Please correct me if i'm wrong...
Let’s take the Intel T2370 (1.73 GHz) chip for laptops as an example. It bus speed runs at 533 MHz.
Let’s have two memory configuration:
1) Two identically-spec’d stick (DDR2-533) 1 gig each in dual channel mode
2) Two not identical sticks (say one 2 gig DDD2-667 and one 512 megs DDR2-533) running in single channel mode (at 533 MHz due to slower memory).
In configuration 1, since it’s running in dual channel mode, then the theoretical max transfer rate is 8,528 MB / sec.
In configuration 2, since it’s running in single channel mode, then the theoretical max transfer rate is 4,264 MB/ sec (which matches the bus speed max transfer rate at 533 MHz.).
Would configuration 1 not run significantly faster than configuration 2? Meaning there isn’t a much of a speed advantage in config 1 because the theoretical max transfer rate for the bus is 4,264 MB/sec.
If that’s the case, then would a mixed bag of ram with 2.5 gigs have an advantage over 2 gigs of match memory running in dual channel mode.
