Ugh

thanks to the ****ty mounting system on my waterblock I got in my kit from www.2coolcomputer.com

my Duron has finally been chipped one time too many, it went and died on me last night, I dunno its a gay mounting system !!

I have been debating getting a Maze2 and another low end Duron to try and OC.....

But I can get an Athlon XP 1500+ retail for about 120 bucks off pricewatch...

my question is - do the fans that come on these thing run quiet ?? do they rally do a sufficient job ?

Noise is a critical factor me me, as I have sensitive ears to loud high noises (yet I still have problems hearing people talk sometimes ...ugh)

I think its a big step up from my now dead duron 700 that was @ 933 (133fsb small cache)

I figure the performance boost is worth it and I can save up for new WC stuff later on down the road..

Anyone have input on these fans/cpu's ??

Also - do they come with the fan attached ? and if so do they have crappy goop or a pad ? I'd hate to have to scrape a pad off and go through lapping it..

A couple of options for ya:

You could just purchase a new hold down for your present wb from dangerden http://www.dangerden.com/test/mall/maze1.asp

You can make one like it cheaply (use 1/4" plexi)

You can add a bolt (as on theirs) to the center of the holdown you have. Install the clip without the waterblock, and carefully mark the center over the core. Remove the clamp, drill tap and put the bolt in. It works best if there is a corresponding divet in the wb where the bolt would contact it. Use the outer two bolts to get within say 1/4" then use the center bolt for final contact and seating pressure (finger tighten only..no tools!). This does a very good job of centering the pressure, and prevents chipping quite well.

The stock hsf that comes with an AMD is just enough to keep it alive. I had a bear of a time mounting it cause the clip was hard to work with, very hard. The fan is within exceptable sound levels, because it's definately not a high performer. You can expect load temps in the high 50's to 60's. But without overclocking, it will live...just not the optimum that we all prefer.

Great luck to ya.

You can get an Athlon XP 1600+ off of newegg.com for $117, and a 1700+ for $13x.

I feel for you I killed a 700 same way.The plex mount is easy to make be sure you use nylon bolts and take your time. Our buy the stuff off the shelf. I do very little looking for parts online I find that it corrups any original thinking. Does that sound weird?
Good Luck

Don't feel bad with the hold down from 2CoolComputers I broke two sockets and broke one with the hold down from D-Tek.

the stock cooler on my 1600+ kept temps about 41 idle and 46 full load, and its really quiet, but i would recomend saving youself the extra money for a retail fan and get a cheap HSF that will do the job better then the retail one.

I thought about getting an aftermarket fan - but I don't see the point..

Water cooling is my hobby, it has been since october and it will be until something better comes along - I don't exactly NEED to O/C a new XP cpu to get the performance I like - and the fan that comes with retails should be sufficient based on the research I have done.

So I could save that money instead of buying a heatsink with a loud delta and get a Maze2 or something

i dont think you should call it 'gay'it is very childish and can offend alot of people.

get a direct die waterblock, it cannot crack your core
