i read on techgage that a new revision of the 4000 series may be coming out soon . they will have a revision of the core, which will allow higher core clock. this may then allow the current core clock to run at lower temperatures.

http://techgage.com/article/asus_eah4850_512mb/12
it says this right above the picture of the Asus 4850 fan picture.

anyone heard anything of this kind?

shamelesly stolen for another forum:)

if you make a profile in catalyst after turning on Overdrive( make sure clock and memory settings are correct). You can then go to the file "C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\Bretware. XML. the xml file will have the same name as the catalyst profile you saved. right click and hit edit.

<Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_0">
<Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Manual" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="0" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="65" />

Change the value to "manual" and Want value to "65"

Save the file then reload your profile in catalyst.

65% seemed perfect for me, 70% was loud but you may need it if your case has poor air flow.

You will may have to select the profile everytime you start the computer, but it will work until there is a fix or better info so i can figure how to change the auto target temp.

Well I got my Sapphire 4870 earlier this week and had to send it back to newegg as RMA due to card overheating within a few minutes of running Win XP. I could not even install the 8.6 drivers it came with before shutting off due to overheating. The entire PCB became so hot to touch that I thought it was going to melt. Obviously mine was defective. I will post reviews as soon as the new one gets here. I still use my Sapphire 2900XT daily and never had any issues with it, but this 4870 was disappointing. :(

Hmm, this happens to be the only GPU-Z with the correct bandwidth of 140.8 Gig a second. Everyone else must have a 4850, which the number falls between 60 and 75Gig a sec... stock vs oced.. Pretty cool that the 4870 is 100% faster than the 4850... Not bad AMD!

The 4000 series in 3DMark06 are super CPU limited with older X2s/Opterons. I have an Opty 185@2880Ghz and I only get 10,700 marks. In all other games the 4870 is well over twice as fast as my 2900XT. I'm very happy.

Whats this about the 1GB 4870s coming out on July 8th (tomorrow)? I just bought a 512MB Diamond today. I'll be ****ed if they're not too much more expensive. I was expecting them to take at least a month to arrive.

I did the vmod and I should have 1.36v under load I don't know how people are measuring the voltage but it seems to be working and temps seem to be ok no artifacts but if I go over 860 I get them. I'll probably go up to 1.41 volts tomarrow and see if I can hit 900+ on core. I modded the bios of the card but only to regulate the fan and Im using amdgpu tool to set the clocks.

Hello guys,

I already have one 4850, and I'd like to get another one in crossfire, but I'm wondering if my PSU will be able to handle everything inside my rig.
The PSU I have is a Antec's EarthWatts 500W (http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=27500). You can see in my signature the rig description (mainly Q6600 G0 and 4 HDDs)...

It may turn on and run, but I would not feel comfortable to suggest it for X-Fire. I'd recommend a minimum 600W unit (a good one at that). Post a thread in the power supply forum and we can take it from there. ;)

You will have to bump you fan speed up > 50% if you push the clocks. Also, VMods are never really completely "safe" ;)

I only tested it for a few hours last night no real stress testing other than a couple vantage runs. the voltmod seems safe enough I hear though that the voltage regulators on the card can get hot and shut it down and putting some heatsinks on them helps. Temps on the core aren't bad though around 60c load with fan at 52%.

It may turn on and run, but I would not feel comfortable to suggest it for X-Fire. I'd recommend a minimum 600W unit (a good one at that). Post a thread in the power supply forum and we can take it from there. ;)

ken, is it a pencil mod or a hard mod? How are you reading VCore? Does any software read it accurately?

You will have to bump you fan speed up > 50% if you push the clocks. Also, VMods are never really completely "safe" ;)

Its a hard mod I just soldered 3 10 ohm resistors together. I don't know how to read vcore at the moment which is really dangerous but temps are ok so im not worried right now but as soon as I figure it out I'll tell you the actual voltage.
As for pencil mod the 4870 requires only about 20-30 ohms which is waay too low to pencil I feel much safer with just 2-3 resistors soldered onto the board. I guess its safe someone at XS allready killed a card but the guy used a 50k variable resistor and turned it all the way down to like 10 ohms which is just baad. As long as your soldering skills aren't terrible its not a hard mod to do.

I lowered the ohms to 20 and I was able to raise the clock an additional 10 mhz to 870 however I'm still not able to get an accurate voltage reading but heat is still pretty good. I'm thinking the 30 gauge kynar wire I used for the mod might be too small. I also played crysis on v high with x4 aa last night for about an hour and half with no problems some minor memory artifacts I might pencil mod my memory to make it more stable. The drivers though keep bugging out at first crysis would play for about 2 seconds then the drivers would crash so I upgraded to the 8.7 beta drivers and that worked until I rebooted now they crash crysis :shrug: 3dmark 06 when I upgraded the drivers got me around 11,000 points so I rebooted and now the drivers crash and I can't complete the bench but for some reason vantage runs fine at any given time. I'll try driver cleaner and reinstall the hotfix drivers later today to see if that fixes it other than that this card is sick I couldent play crysis at those settings with a gx2.

Well, after some research it ends out that my rig would pump something like 19.5A on the V12_1 line of the power supply, which is more than the 17A mentionned by the manufacturer. The 500W should be enough though...

I think I will pull back and keep only one card, this is the safest way, and it's enough to run any kind of games...

Does laying two 120mm fans on top of your x-fire setup help at all???? Just to remove a bit of heat from the pcb side? I realize it wouldn't be as efficient as some good waterblocks, but I've seen it done with some success. Actually it worked fairly well on a SLI setup I had once.

Oh, anything. Just curious as to what mods can be done, and have been tried. Some cards can be voltmodded, whether it's a hardmod or not, doesn't matter. Last year watercooling was my big thing to try, this year I'd like to try doing some mods to videocards, motherboards etc. I love to tweak and I've been getting progressively deeper into it as the years go on. It's something I've been wanting to try, and I have a friend who specialized in circuit board soldering and whatnot, so I figure together we could get er dun without killing anything.
Voiding warantee is my only concern.

There is an option, it's just hidden in an XML file. Make a new profile called fanspeed, find it on your drive (should be "C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\ATI\ACE\Profiles\fanspeed.xml", obviously your username, though). Find the following sections:

<Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_0">
<Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Automatic" />
</Feature>

<Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="0" />
</Feature>

Change Automatic to Manual and change 0 to whatever percent you want the fan to stay at. Remember that this is a >10k RPM fan at 100%, and will be very loud if you set it to high speed permanently. I've tried setting it to Automatic with a percentage of 100, but it doesn't seem to change anything from default behavior. If you aren't using a couple slots below your card and have $50 to spare, a ThermalRight V2, ThermalRight "8800 PWM" sinks, and a 80mm Noctua fan will cool it much better and much quieter.

I have the card right in front of me with a WC'd CPU on a test bed. The fan hub is 2ft from my head, so I would have noticed any change. In my case 45% is definitely too loud. 30% is the sweet spot for a caseless setup, I'm sitting at 58DegC. Inside a case however, you're right. There's not much chance you would hear a difference.

Chad, that's a nice score. Particularly since I'm running a 4870 and a higher clock on my quad. I wonder, is that due mostly to difference between PCI and PCI2? Vista vs XP? Or just voltage and frequency?
Regardless, it seems the 4850 is certainly a great a buy as everyone has been saying.

I would say It is all of the above. In Vista my score is about 400 points lower. Overall I am very pleased with the performance of this card at 1650x1080 resolutions. Only problem is that my memory won't overclock over 1110 no matter what I do. I did get a nice core, so I cant complain

What I did to increase the voltage is just ran a few lines over the point indicated on the second image on this link. I did this with out a voltmeter, due to the fact it says voltage will not go over 1.4. Do not do the higher voltages and memory pencil mods with out a meter.http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/overclocking/voltmods/151/2

Groovy. Well, I'm just starting out with these cards. Built my new bench last night with an x48 chipset so we'll see what they can do shortly.
Pencil mod will be the next step once I play around with fan settings and cooling.

Just wanted to add that my Asus HD 4850 has a program that auto throttles the fan based on temperature, you guys might want to see if it works on cards other than the asus, I would assume it does.

It's called Asus SmartDoctor, it works fine once you disable any profiles you're using with ATI CCC (I clicked the default buttons a few times and it was ok). After that I switched between the different fan options on SmartDoctor until I was sure that it was switching fan speed properly.

how are you guys gettin 700/1100 on 4850s? what voltages/bios/other mods are you running?

I hope by I get my RMA 4850 back before it becomes 50 yrs old. Sapphire told me 2-4 weeks - we'll see if that's true.

As soon as I get it back (hoping I didn't already uncontrollably buy a dual-gpu card), I've got this ready for action:
E8400
Abit IX38 QuadGT
Sapphire 2x4850 Crossfire
2x1GB Patriot DDR2-1150 (or 2 other 1066 kits, whichever is better)
OCZ 1000W or 800W PSU

All watercooled:
D-Tek Fuzion for the E8400 with an MCP350 pump (maybe modded) and bip2 rad
Dual MCW60 blocks for the 4850s with a Bix2 rad and D5 pump

This is my big plan. I hope it happens soon... might just go with 4850 4870 xfire or who knows in the meantime...

I miss being part of these benchmarks :(

Crossfire not scaling so well? I figured you'd take some of those records down too.

I'm having a tough time with my setup. Not crazy about this 8500 and the crossfire is giving me a headache. Can't figure out why my 03 scores have gone down about 8K. Proxycon and Troll scores are down about 100FPS. I've seen other people with this same issue.

Actually CF does scale nicely, the problem I'm having is the CF board I have won't boot with 4870's (DFI) yet other people run these cards on it NP. I need that board because it's the only one that will fit my cooling. When I had the cards on air Nature was scaling nicely with CPU clocks alone, you don't see that in single card ;)

I'm also having the '03 issue, it's a pain in the butt :D

My best advice then is that it's some kind of driver issue. I've switched between 8.6, 8.7, and 8.8b without resolving the issue. I've also switched between stock gpu bios and various others without fixing it. I've even switched motherboard bios. Even did the complete reinstall of the OS along with a few recoveries to the time period when I put up my high scores without success. I don't know what happened or why I can't get my old 03 scores back. If anyone learns what the cause and fix is please let us know. :screwy:

At one point someone was saying it was resolution related but I've tested that. Sure seems like a screwey bench to me now, some guys also said it was the 8.6 drivers but thats not it either, at least for me. Only thing I did do when I changed drivers was leave CCC installed, maybe thats it, CCC seems driver specific in some cases. I'll do a fresh install with 8.6's tonight and see if it's any better.

Eveyone else - Are GFX BIOS's the same as Mobo BIOS's where you have to use a BIOS from the manufacturer? Or could I just use this BIOS on my Visiontek.

Also, why are GFX BIOS's so hard to find? My searches bring up nothing.

The voltage is 1.276 in the new BIOS. For the record my Visiontek BIOS is 1.263. I don't know if this voltage is actually being reached (1.276) as I did not gain even 1 mhz or any stability at my clocks. I assume either the clocks are a lie, and it's still 1.263, or that small of a voltage bump has no affect on the stability. You mileage may vary as the evidence is only for my case.

CCC only goes to 790 - 1100.

hence the second gpu-z screeny, that is the accurate clock, 850 - 1125, the first screen was just to prove the card and voltage etc.

Question for those of you who have (had?) both 4850 and 4870 cards. How much hotter does the 4870 run than the 4850 (if at all)? Does it have to run the fan louder to keep it cool, or does the dual slot design allow it to cool better, thus allowing lower fan speeds?

The 4870 stock cooler is much better than on the 4850. You can run it much quieter and still achieve nice clocks. I don't really think you need to overclock it much unless your benching or something. If you were running a stock 4870 card with stock bios, you could probably run the card at max core clock (790Mhz) with fan still at a quiet speed (40% or less).

Here's the thing though.......

4850 pencil mod = yes

4870 pencil mod = no :-/

The 4870 is the better card but the 4850 is the better value, especially if you use better than stock (reference) cooling. ;)

I flashed my VTek 4870 to the ASUS TOP bios, which was nice bump, stable with only 40% fan. If I wanted to flash to the Diamond XOC BE BIOS 990/1200 BIOS.. is that going to require full fan for stability?
I'm using the Diamond bios on both my cards. Although the stock clocks are 800/1100, you can always turn them down. My cards will run 850/1100 with the fan at 50% pretty easy so I don't know why you couldn't run stock clocks with only 40% fan. Unless of course your case is really hot or you live in a hot climate.

This is what I've got going for now. This is the first OC I tried right off the bat. This is NOT a submission for the wall of fame. That will come later when I receive my XSPC Razer full cover block and I start messing with the bios. ;)

For know I'm cooling my card with the MCW60 and the stock heatsink's metal back plate for memory and VRMs (not using stock fan, though). OCed with AMD GPU Clock Tool, all stock voltages.

Furmark + ATI Tools to check stability. :D

Keep cranking it up. I look forward to your submission. Also what brand is the card?

Is there a "top" BIOS to flash a HD4850 to? I see everyone is flashing their HD4870 to the "ASUS TOP bios" but I was wondering if there was a sweet BIOS for the HD4850?

No. All the different bios are for non-reference cards. You can mod your own though with RBE1.15.

It's a Visiontek. Sorry but the card went bad, when I turned on my PC the screen stayed black, no signal to monitor at all. So I returned it to where I bought it from and they sent me a new one, should arrive this week (tomorrow or Thursday). However, I will be selling it since I bought a Sapphire 4870 1GB which arrives on Thursday. Also bought a Full Cover waterblock for it. :D

I'll be posting results for the 1GB 4870. I want to sell the 4870 512MB as new, so I won't be using it. Can't sell it here yet, though. :shrug:

Ah so the 'new stock' is the same 800/1100 as the ASUS TOP bios. Does the diamond bios bump the voltage a bit further?

Stock clocks for the TOP & Diamond bios are not the same.

No, the voltage is the same. I think there is only one small step allowable in the 4870 bios...... goes from 1.26 to 1.27. I haven't messed with it in any way.

Your new stock clocks for the diamond bios are 800/1100. My new stock clocks with the asus bios are 795/1100. What am I not getting here?

So it looks like a hard mod is the next step to get some more voltage.

Is my score normal for my clocks?

I'm thinking about getting a couple new coolers.. and even possibly doing a hard mod on both of them. I'd like to add them to my loop with another radiator, but I'm not sure if the water flow would be good with all of it in a single loop.. :confused:

Which bios should be used for higher clock max and/or more voltage on a sapphire 4870 1GB model?

I been looking for this also. I can't seem to find any of the 512mb flavor cards as 1gb models like the Diamond 512mb Black Edition, no 1gb models anywhere. And no Asustop's either. The only card that seems to have maybe a workable setup is the 1gb Palit and that does look nice because it comes with a HDMI out.

I'd like to pick up a 1gb card but if there isn't any good OC'ing bios for it I will probably pass.

I have a Powercolor 4870 1gb PCS+ on order. How does the Powercolor bios rate since it is already a non-reference card and has the 4 phase power change? What is the current consensous on the card and what mods/bios upgrades are warranted/reccommended with it?

I have a 1GB card right now and I'm wondering if the BIOS editor is going to work for me since I've only seen reports of people editing 512MB bioses.

I want some more voltage, and my memory max OC sucks ass atm (975)

Alright, this thread isn't as active as the 3xxx thread :temper:

I'm thinking about watercooling my cards, and then volt modding both. Maybe doing the hard mod :beer:

@satansangel114, nice clocks!, pencil?

no pencil for me, not acurate enough.

still working on the Vgddr, it seems to be picky about voltage

I've got a Powercolor 4850 which has an improved silent cooling. (Looks like an orb.)

I read through the whole thread but how do I know which settings are proven for 24/7 usage ?

It runs stable @ 720/1100 which pretty much I guess.
But how do I know this will break my card ? No Voltage inrease required btw...

Anyone actually running a 4850 @ such high settings for weeks now ?

Temps are fine: 61°C load

I'm getting more and more "Display driver has stopped responding and has.." these days. They still popped up before I did a bios flash but not very frequently. It happens with fullscreen video or games (just not steam games). I know that what happens is the gpu doesn't respond fast enough and windows resets it after two seconds and that you can edit the registry to up the 'wait time', but this doesn't seem right. Official word from ATi is that its not driver related its hardware. Maybe I'll try going back to the stock bios.
Also I have a second card installed, a 3870 running an additional two monitors, so my situation may be different. :shrug:

My card clocks very poorly, and does the same thing at 725, I think it's just how well the card clocks to be stable. I don't get any artifacts, just driver resets.

If i ever get any play time off work, I'm going to try for 21k in 06 again.

I was just thinking, anyone else that has gone from a 3870 to a 4850 (CF or not), have you noticed textures loading slower? mainly crysis... which crysis is a buggy game anyway.

Hi guys, kinda new to overclocking, I have a 4850, brilliant card from what I can decern, I've done this so far:

Any room for improvement, that you can think?

Cheers lads :)
