Cross-generation Crossfire?

I've seen this mentioned before, and I think many with 3650, 3850, 3870's would jump on board with the 4850 & 4870 asap if it is possible. What I am referring to is the possibility of running say a 3870 in Crossfire with a 4870. I know there are AMD chipsets with integrated GPUs that work similarly, so how about the stand alone cards?

AMD has said it is not possible between 4000 and 3000, and most likely never will be.

It'd be like throwing an 8600GT in SLI with a 9600GT.. Not much point :)
